Turkey puts pressure on Nato to halt air strikes

Nato top military commander US Admiral James Stavridis met Turkish military leaders in Ankara yesterday.

Turkey has been reported to be delaying agreement on a Nato command structure for the no-fly zone over Libya.

Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has warned that the rules of engagement in Libya must be restricted to protecting civilians, enforcing the arms embargo and no-fly zone, and the provision of humanitarian aid.

This would exclude any further air strikes against Libyan leader Muammar Gadaffi's ground forces.

Mr Davutoglu met Admiral Stavridis upon his arrival in Ankara late on Wednesday and discussed operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.

He also called Nato secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussen, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and British Foreign Secretary William Hague to convey Turkey's views on Libya.

But in Paris French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe boasted that the international military operation may last days or weeks - but not months.

Others disagreed, with Russia's former ambassador to Libya Vladimir Chamov warning that Col Gadaffi could hold off coalition forces for months, still enjoys broad public support and will not step down.

The hostilities could turn Libya into a hotbed of instability resembling Iraq or Somalia, he said.

Just a suggestion for Obama, but maybe next time we should figure out what we’re going to do BEFORE committing our military. My God this guy’s an idiot.

What a surprise ... we can’t count on Turkey when the chips are down. Did we learn nothing from the invasion of Iraq?

Maybe the one good thing to come out of this Libya debacle is Turkey leaving NATO.

BS,

It's the Turks we're talking about.

They simply want paid off. They want something every time they chime in like this. This is possibly a great deal for us! Maybe some of these Euro’s get a good dose of their own medicine, what we have to put up with on a continual basis with them as in Iraq 91, Iraq 03, Republic of Georgia, Libya 1986, Balkans................... Maybe the Germans can go against this effort and attack the French politically, exploit it internally in some political game, the Austrians could deny over flight rights, the Spaniards exploit this during their elections, the Turks make a buck, the Hungarians do nothing and say they essentially have nothing to provide......... In a way, maybe us playing in the background and them stepping up and having to work out all their little games they play amongst each other is a good thing for us. Maybe this will help in reforming NATO in the long run? A positive unintended consequence?

Not a stalemate. Qadaffi will WIN. The opposition has nothing going for it at all.

So, you missed the point entirely huh?

NO, I think that they say one thing and do another, just like they did in the Iraq invasion. You DO remember that, right General? And listen, if you can’t respond to the subject of a post, save my time and yours and just move on.
