Upon Governor Palin’s arrival Israelis will be celebrating the festivities of Purim.
Purim is the day Jews celebrate the story of Esther. It’s a very festive day. Kids dress up and food gifts are distributed to family and friends. People are very joyous and its common to see lots of singing and dancing in the streets. It’s customary to drink lots of wine on Purim. It is also a day of giving a lot of money to charity.
Everywhere in the world, including most of Israel, Purim began at sundown on Saturday night and ends after sundown on Sunday night.
In Jerusalem however, Purim takes place one day later and begins at sundown Sunday and ends after sundown Monday.
Governor Palin will join Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu for dinner in Jerusalem on Monday evening; The Purim dinner!

Yes, to the best of my knowledge, her visit has been given at least some attention in the Israeli media.
I've seen mention of it on the Net at both American and Israeli sites for at least a week.
Mmmm.. someone is persistent in being a stick in the mud. More so, it requires an absences of any sense of of irony. Sarah Palin is enormously popular in Israel. And undoubtably, her visit is a source of joy. Do with that as you will, the Israeli's get it, even if you don't.

Sorry but your headline is, in fact, intentionally misleading. If you have to go to such lengths that you edge into dishonesty to hype your girl then you should reevaluate the facts about her.

The Rabbi's who have commented on this over the past two thousand years have studied the issue from almost every side. These were people who are not inclined to brook silliness or even abide by a practice that is not of significant meaning past their time, hence they forbade the practice of polygamy more than 1000 years ago. A ruling that has gained acceptance and general agreement in the following years. The Rabbi's looked at the Purim celebration and the obligations surrounding it and assigned significant religious significance worthy of demanding excess when almost every teaching for every situation instead insists on moderation and fences around fences to prevent immoderate behavior to rise to the level of sin.
Rather your snap judgement that something makes no sense is built from ignorance rather than seeking an understanding of this seeming paradox. Strikingly, you should also remember that this obligation falls only upon Jews, so if this doesn't include you, you need not worry. How cool is that! But, alternately, much of what is written in the Bible is universal, so perhaps the meaning of this may be of value even to someone who is deeply suspicious of such things.

I understand your point here, its just I went through this process with Pissant, and it wasn't flipping a switch. His style of writing and thought didn't change so much as morphed into exasperation and stretching to make his point as whole crowds of FR posters took him to task. His basic stances that many folks around here agree with became so strident, unreasonable, and impractical that he just couldn't believe folks would actually not support his ranting. No issue was as important to him as his opposition to the Homosexual agenda and this characterized his fury and ultimately his downfall. Ultimately for his stance, if you didn't actively hate the sinner and denounce them even when they were otherwise being productive and patriotic then you were their supporter. Sarah Palin has some very active and prominent Conservative and yet openly homosexual supporters and she didn't go out of her way to denounce them and this was too much for Pissant.
Palin also rejected the basic outlines and tenants of the homosexual agenda in marriage and attempts to mainstream the behavior and lifestyle, but Pissant decried this as only lip service to a crypto-gay supporting agenda. Just like the charge of Latent Racism or Latent Homosexuality turns into an analog of the old saw about "no longer beating your wife" this formulation of charge defies reason for any act to defend against the charge can be discounted by the very effort to address it in the mind of those bringing the accusation, and it became a logic trap for him. Palin deals with this issue in a typically Western, Libertarian fashion in that the government has little stake in defining people's private lives, instead this is the province of God and faith and saving grace. Instead, public policy must and should protect the Family as the basic unit of our society.
The "Gay" political agenda is a direct threat to the family and morality that makes for a safe and peaceful society, such that when you want to bring this behavior out of your house and into the public square, don't be surprised if people reject it and your whole line of reasoning. Gay people are not entitled to special rights and making all things equal for gays means withdrawing the obligation to support Families as one of the core missions of society and thus cannot and will not ever be done in a society that is not doomed to decay and depravity.
You would think that we could find general agreement on such things but, alas, such a stance was considered supportive of the Gay agenda.

The admonition to love the sinner but hate the sin is a difficult one for many, especially when the sinners claim the sin as the core of their being. It’s particularly difficult if consequences of a particular type of sin have been dire in some personal way, perhaps with family members.
I can understand that, but I can’t understand going ‘round the bend to the point of becoming a parody that damages conservatives.
The ADL is “right-leaning”? I bet Abe Foxman is teed off at Remnick for what would be considered an insult. Well, the more animosity among lefties, in general, the better it is for the rest of us, and for Israel, the United States, and western civilization.

This is an intensely unfair and wrongheaded statement. In fact, anyone with Jewish training that reads the Blue Book or has contact with AA knows that this program rises right out of Jewish practice. Acceptance of God, Acknowledging our own weakness and the sins that we have committed against others for which God cannot provide forgiveness but we must repent and ask for forgiveness directly. Learning to lean on God and fight to live a life of meaning and worth while rejecting crutches and rationalizations.
My daughter's boyfriend's family is intensely alcoholic and he is someone traumatized by growing up in this situation and he very much hates all things alcohol too and we just do what we can to help. This included attending Al-Anon meetings with him so he could find comfort in a community who understood his challenges in dealing with his mother who suffers from this and is barely functional.
I shake my head and sometimes ask God why must I carry these folks and have to deal with this family, but the boy is a wonderful person with a bright mind who is honest, religious in an unpretentious way, and loving in a way that almost makes me weep. Why my daughter would pick this boy? I can only say, it seems like God is willing to tie my hands any time I have tried to separate them, so I just have learned to accept and try to make the best of things.
Drinking alcohol is not a sin, it is behaviors of seeking drunkenness as an escape that leads us into sin or is the result of sins that we cannot forgive ourselves.
Its easy to find fighting words, especially when it comes to Christians and Jews. Exercise extra special care about making generalizations about anyone, and understand that Reform Jews are most likely to agree with you where as the Orthodox are most likely to keep the obligation to become intoxicated for Purim because it is a mitzvot regardless of any concerns it might create.
