en. Rand Paul, Republican from Kentucky, had a press conference scheduled for today unveiling his plans for a five-year path to a balanced budget.

- Reduces spending by nearly $4 trillion relative to the President's budget - Achieves a $19 billion surplus in FY2016 - Brings all non-military discretionary spending back to FY2008 levels - Requires the process of entitlement reform, including Social Security and Medicare, with final implementation by FY2016 - Does not change Social Security or Medicare benefits - Block-grants Medicaid, SCHIP, foods stamps, and child nutrition · Provides the President's request for war funding - Reduces military spending 6 percent in FY2012 · Eliminates four departments: - Department of Commerce (transfers certain programs) - Department of Education (preserves Pell grants) - Department of Housing and Urban Development - Department of Energy (transfers nuclear research and weapons to Department of Defense) · Repeals Obamacare

A great idea. Unfortunately it’s dead on arrival.

The irony here is that by being a Senator, Senator Rand’s plan will get more of a hearing in the Senate than in the House. The Senate won’t pass anything like it of course because the majority of the Senate opposes fiscal responsibility on philosophical grounds. But it might get something of a hearing.

And as for the House, we can rest assured that the Weeper, Eric the Weasel, and the rest of the GOP Capitulation Caucus will insure that nothing close to what Sen. Rand is proposing will ever see the light of day.

I didn’t say he was good, just great, like Stalin, or the Bubonic Plague. Johnson built the modern welfare/plantation/serf nation we all so lovingly enjoy now.

I agree completely - he's selling snake oil with this plan and the math simply doesn't work.

The fact of the matter is, 60% of the federal budget consists of social entitlement programs (social security, medicare, medicaid, schip, welfare, etc), and interest payments on the national debt.

It's also simple math to observe that our government is borrowing $0.40 of every dollar it spends - which means that revenues cover 60% of the budget.

Now connect the dots: Every penny of revenue our government takes in goes to social entitlement spending and interest payments on the debt. Everything else is on borrowed fiat money. This means we could completely eliminate every other department in the government - Education, Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, Veterans Affairs, the Treasury, Labor, Interior, State, etc., including the complete elimination of the Dept. of Defense and 100% of ALL military spending, and might just barely be able to break even covering the entitlement programs with revenues (assuming interest rates on the debt payments never go up).

It is IMPOSSIBLE to not touch social entitlement spending and balance the budget, let alone achieve a surplus.

If we can get more Tea Party reps elected in 2012 and change leadership we have a chance. The force is strong in Rand!

People seem to be ignoring the elephant in the room - Republicans ALREADY HAVE the ability to control the deficit spending. All they have to do is not authorize any more increases to the debt ceiling, and the government won't be able to borrow any more money.

Presto! Instant balanced budget, and there isn't a damn thing Obama can do about it. Of course, that would mean instantly cutting 40% of government spending, which is now IMPOSSIBLE to do without draconian cuts across the board, including social entitlement programs. That's what we need in order to survive as a nation, but they won't do it.

Just watch - in a couple weeks (when we hit the debt ceiling again), the Republicans will vote to let Geitner continue to borrow more of Bernanke's increasingly worthless fiat currency, and we'll see yet more inflation in food and energy.

Let's see how he does after (at least) one term of battle testing, before we nominate him for the top job.

You mean like America waited for the well seasoned Kenyan?

This doesn’t sound like enough cuts to do what is needed. And the American people would rather go bankrupt than lose four Cabinet posts which they truly believe they need.

You are right, the Republicans fear doing the right thing because they know the American people won’t support them. They will look over their shoulders and find no one following them. The American people prefer bankruptcy, whatever that means, to the most minor of cuts.

The American people, and Republican primary voters included, qare so uninformed that I suspect fewer than 10 percent have ever heard of the firm of McConnell, Boehner, Cantor, Ryan, and McCarthy.

I’ll read everyone’s replies after I post this.

I must say, there are three senators of this new class that have completely impressed me:

Rand Paul
Marco Rubio
Mike Lee (MY senator!)

These three are principled conservatives, and not prone to shits and giggles...very serious and thoughtful human beings.

We are lucky to have ALL three of them.

The GOP, all of them, better find their backbone and their patriotism and follow Paul’s lead. If not, take names and vote them out in 2012. Find men and women who put their country first before their own personal quest for power. Time to stop politicians from lining their pockets at the expense of our country and our children and grandchildren’s future. Their under-the-table $$$ from Lobbyists has got to be stopped and jail time their penalty. I do believe that We The People’s patience is “over.” That message must be delivered to Boehner, who is looking very weak and unable to lead, and the rest of the DC eunuchs now.

I was impressed by Cantor and Ryan at first - after all, compared to BO they sounded good. I am disillusioned now. The fiscal situation is so urgent, we need bold action like Rand Paul proposes.

Make no mistake. I think Rand Paul is great, but he hasn't done anything more than any garden variety Freeper would have done, had they just been elected to the US Senate.

I believe Rand Paul is a Freeper. I don't know what his handle is/was though. If I did, I would not say. He is public enemy number one to the MSM.

Agreed. Apparently the Nov. heat wasn’t turned high enough. I have not been critical of Boehner up to now, but letting Obamacare money get through on this last deal... bad, bad, bad.

Perhaps Boehner’s speaker seat needs to heat up a bit? If he has to sit in the hot seat, he might get a bit more motivated.

Wonder if something along this line might get the ball rolling? See post #19.

Has anyone called Boehner’s DC office to ask the Crier where his spine is? My call to Boehner’s DC office was answered by an arrogant young staffer who couldn’t have cared less about what I had to say?

Anyone know how we can get Boehner’s attention relative to his lack of spine and guts and his not listening to We The People who gave him the majority last November?

Rush has been bringing attention to this question all week. The Young Guns are exposing themselves as The Young Eunuchs who need to be voted out for their inaction.

“The force is strong in Rand!”

Also in Michelle Bachmann who came up with $450 billion in cuts. Only $50 billion less than Rand Paul. The GOP leadership has no intention of trying push through anything of substance. For one thing they don’t have control of the Senate so no matter what they pass in the House its going to get knocked down in the Senate. At least until the 2012 elections.

So the only real ammunition the GOP has is to refuse to vote to raise the debt ceiling. That would keep it from happening and the Dems would have to scramble to make huge cuts to pay the interest on the T Bills every month. It would work beautifully but the GOP in my opinion will not do it. They won’t do it because they want to get the credit for being the ones who say what gets cut.

Paul is the first guy to actually suggest cutting unecessary agencies which is my pet peeve. The ones he picked are my top choices.
