WASHINGTON -- "My administration has not curtailed the rights of gun owners," the president boasted, "it has expanded them, including allowing people to carry their guns in national parks and wildlife refuges."
No, that wasn't George W. Bush. It was President Obama in an op-ed piece published Sunday in the Arizona Daily Star that practically begged the gun lobby to support modest reforms of our lax gun laws.
He wasn't even asking for a ban on those large gun magazines, which would almost certainly have saved lives on that January day in Tucson when six people were killed and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was among 13 wounded by gunfire.
What Obama endorsed were, well, baby steps toward strengthening background checks to keep guns out of the hands of "dangerous criminals and fugitives" and those who are "unbalanced." That's a fine idea, though his specific proposals -- "enforcing laws that are already on the books," "reward the states that provide the best data," "make the system faster and nimbler" -- were hardly the stuff of political courage...
--snip--
The first statement is a wild distortion of the position of actual advocates of sane gun laws. They are not seeking "sweeping anti-gun legislation." They are pushing tame steps LaPierre and his lobbyists reject -- thorough background checks and a ban on those big magazines. Yes, restoring the highly effective ban on assault weapons would also be good. But that's Obama's own position. Isn't it?
Obama observed last week that "bullying can have destructive consequences for our young people." It can also have destructive consequences for politicians. The president could set a good example by standing up to the bullies of the NRA.

And that's no small task.
“He wasn’t even asking for a ban on those large gun magazines, which would almost certainly have saved lives”
I would love to see the facts Dionne has to back this statement. Anyone can do a mag change in less than two seconds. Those who practice can do it in less than one second. That is timed from aimed shot to next aimed shot after changing the mag.
I am sure the rest of his OPINIONS are just as well researched and factually backed....

There we go again...words that strike fear in timid domesticated males and a majority of females......NRA, Guns, Men, BULLIES!
These words have worked before so that these timid and naive people, in a panic to become safe from these horrible words and people, gladly throw away their freedoms to be protected by the government.
It’s worked before and will work again. It’s too sad that we have become so physiologically weak that we have lost the ability to protect ourselves.
E.J. Dionne and government policies:
Makin’ “Bullies” look good.
The author is a Domestic Enemy. Hang him...
Dionne belongs to the vast conspiracy of lib-leftist newsmen who over the last fifty years have made sure only half the story gets told about guns. Whenever someone shoots up a place and murders people with a firearm, it makes national headlines. However, the numerous examples of average citizens defending themselves with firearms from dangerous criminals are rarely if ever published. Now that’s a conspiracy. And Dionne is part of it.
Allow? They allow? That is mighty white of 0bozo.
It was Bush that signed that into law, and then Obama and his gun--grabbing goons TRIED to stop it by floating an idea that LEAD might negatively efect the sensitive ENVIRONMENT in our national parks. The EPA needed to "study" this, so the new law had to be held up.
When they saw, through public opinion, that this LIE would not fly, they made it so OBAMA, not Bush, was the President that signed this REAL COMMON-SENSE legislation into law. His handlers wanted HIM to be able to take the credit and LOOK like the pro-gun President he is most assuredly NOT.
BLOAT and keep your powder dry!
Its our so-called "assault" weapons, STANDARD capacity magazines (30 round for ARs, 17 round for Glock 17s, etc.), and LOTS of ammunition that may be needed in the future to defend FREEDOM.
>>None of my “assault” rifles have ever misbehaved, either; at least not since I caught one trying to sneak out one night with the SUV. I paddled them both, and sent them to their rooms. Not a problem since.<<
My neighbor has been telling me that he has caught his HiCap mags smoking out behind the garage. I looked out behind the barn and darned if there isn’t cigarette butts all over the place. Sonething is going on. Don’t trust your magazines or weapons. Keep them locked up in the safe or in the holster you’re wearing.
Indeed. Watch yer knot!
This is such a bad time to bring up gun control.
Fortunately, Obama is apparently entirely ignorant of what is going on in the world.
The NRA’s refusal to meet with Obama was one of the most appropriate actions I have ever seen an organization take.
Perfect.
First, someone send EJ the information on Project Gunwalker.
Second, tell the President that his Administration is guilty of negligent homicide of Border Agent Terry and an unknown number of Mexican citizens.
Third, tell Obama that the supply of weapons to rebels in another country is an act of war against Mexico!
With WHAT?
A slingshot?
HAHAHAHA
Bullies? All we want is to be left alone by the government. Those who restrict rights are bullies or in Dionne’s wannabe bullies. The former are scum. The latter are pathetic.
