WASHINGTON (AP) -- The chief of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Wednesday that all the water is gone from one of the spent fuel pools at Japan's most troubled nuclear plant, but Japanese officials denied it. If NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko is correct, this would mean there's nothing to stop the fuel rods from getting hotter and ultimately melting down. Read more at source.

Had the misfortune of being in the Dr.’s office today w/ CNN on the tv. I could not believe how many sheeple were lapping up the sensational BS they were spewing. I waited outside in the hallway.

Probably both. The Pool at reactor 4 might have been damaged from the explosion in Reactor 3. And the pool of reactor 4 contained hot fuel due to the maintenance of reactor 4.

Germany ? They decided 10 years ago to quit nuclear power plants until 2020-2025 and go green with wind/solar and biomass. They should ask the russians instead. Why ? Simple.
Russia:
- Is the only country in the world with expert knowledge in nuclear desasters
- Is close by so they have interesst in fixing this shit soon
- I close by so logistics shouldn’t be too complicated

Seven pools notwithstanding, from all of the reporting I’ve seen, it’s only the pool at Unit #4 that has “hot” fuel in it.
Other units MAY have rods in the storage pools, but not fresh out of the reactor as in unit #4.
IIRC, Unit #4 had just been de-fueled, and has no fuel in the core; only in the spent fuel storage pool.
I don’t think this is the case with the other active units (1, 2 & 3).

50% of FReepers and probably 90% of the general population are too uninformed to understand the difference between getting irradiated by being in the vicinity of a radioactive source and getting contaminated by radioactive particles. Of corse neither does the media, so there’s no hope for any of these groups.

Wow, I’ve got a big unopened bottle from KI4U down in the emergency supplies closet. I bet it’s worth over $1000 if the panic holds.
Not worth the brain damage to put it up on eBay, only to have some fool reverse the charges when the panic fades.
The Russians would have been good and still can contribute. They can give templates on how to convince people to sacrifice themselves for the common good.
Because these plants are in meltdown, including the spent waste rods. This is going to go on for awhile. It is not apocalyptic nor Chernobyl, but with 4 plus plants involved, it has the potential to equal Chernobyl’s 1 if they all meltdown.
This is not panic, it is what’s going on. That smoke is carrying dangerous radioactive particles.
It seems the “don’t panic” people are in a panic. How is it that the Japanese PR has been so slow and faulty when the top US nuclear energy guy goes there and says with certainty that the pool is dry?
Go black market. Sell them by the pill to soccer moms outside the grocery store for cash. You can make three times that.
while I DO believe this to be a “hugh and series” event, I want to remind everyone of how the media tried to whip us into a frenzy with the H1N1 and with the gulf oil spill.
I seem to recall endless news stories telling us the Macondo well COULD collapse and totally destroy the gulf not to mention the HUGE methane cloud that would engulf FL.
I actually was filled with anxiety for quite awhile reading that stuff daily!
We all need to CALM DOWN!
Besides, we cannot do a thing about it.
