Radiation 'extremely high', fuel pool dry

THERE is no water left in the spent fuel pool of reactor No.4 at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant, resulting in "extremely high" radiation levels, the chair of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission warned.

"In addition to the three reactors that were operating at the time of the incident, a fourth reactor is also right now under concern. This reactor was shut down at the time of the earthquake," said NRC chairman Gregory Jaczko.

"What we believe at this time is there has been a hydrogen explosion in this unit due to an uncovering of the fuel in the spent fuel pool," he said, noting the explosion happened several days ago but its effects were cause for concern.

"We believe that secondary containment has been destroyed and there is no water in the spent fuel pool and we believe that radiation levels are extremely high which could possibly impact the ability to take corrective measures."

“Right now 4-6 nuclear plants are melting down, you aren’t seriously comparing the two events???”

I AM seriously comparing the two events. What is happening now is not going to harm anyone here.

If intentionally nuking Japan twice didn’t do us in, leaking reactors over there are not going to harm us either.

“After the fallout went around the world, how many got cancer that it was never attributed to?”

Your question is clumsily worded, nonsensical and unanswerable.

If you meant to imply that there were people who got cancer here in the U.S. caused by the bombing of Japan then I only ask you to name three.

Just three, otherwise, you got nuthin’.

You are asking me to prove a negative. (I think)

Your sentence structure is very confusing.

Shouldn’t you be putting up plastic and duct tape and taking your iodine pills?

Well since you’re experienced at it, I thought I would wait on your instructions on how to do that.

He is a troll. He has been posting nonstop doom and gloom on every reactor thread. I hit abuse. More freepers need to do the same.

What I am basing what on? The simple fact that dillusion resolves pollution of all types?

That’s facts, always has been and always will be.

Concentrations are what are deadly, as anything dillutes its toxicity decreases. Its physics.

Every plant you eat has deadly chemicals in them.. however, most have such low percentages that they pose no threat to you, your body, easily processes and gets rid of them.. If however you extract the checmicals from hundreds of plants and were to ingest that all at once, you’d drop dead.

The Chernobyl meltdown also contaminated vast tracts of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and northern Europe with radioactive cesium. “There are still limitations on the export of sheep from Cumbria, in the U.K., and reindeer from Scandinavia,” Hoffman said. Cesium also contaminated fish from Scandinavia’s northern lakes.

Cesium is absorbed by plants and works its way through the food chain, getting into meat and milk. Unlike radioactive iodine, which has a short half life, cesium lingers in the environment. “Radioactive iodine will be gone in a month,” Hoffman said. “Cesium’s going to be around for decades.”

Every reactor on the planet contains Plutonium.
Plutonium, 24,000 years.
