“I dont think I have ever heard so many ‘experts’ with different opinions.”
Most likely, scientists (qua scientists) and engineers are on one side, with politicians, “activists,” and journalists opposite. I’ll let you guess which is which.
Therefore it is better than yesterday, when the commissioner said that it was apocalypse.
Anyone who has seen pictures of an exploded gun barrel or receiver that resulted from an accident involving a charge of half-a-teaspoon of smokeless powder - might have doubts about who ultimately wins the battle of pressure versus steel.
In the coming hours there could be further catastrophic events, which could pose a threat to the lives of people on the island
Just that little island? You’re letting a crisis go to waste, sir. It should threaten the lives of people everywhere. Iodine pills for the globe! I don’t care if you’re high in the Rocky Mountains, at an Antartic reasearch site, 20,000 leagues under the sea, or in the international space station. You might die!
“what in the hell would some EU Bureaucratic Pope know about it?”
From what I’ve read France supplied the MOX fuel for reactor 3. They also use MOX fuel in some of their reactors. EU officials should therefore be well aware of the long term liabilities from a loss of containment and burning fuel rods which contain 9% plutonium.
There’s also substantial plutonium in the spent rods which are catching fire repeatedly. The burning of fuel rods vaporizes plutonium which is going out to sea on the wind making containment and cleanup impossible.
Half life of plutonium isotopes range from 88 - 370,000 years so yes, just about everyone has cause for criticism of the cooling and containment efforts.
Japan has asked the US military repeatedly for assistance in what is clearly a potential global threat (ocean circulation of released plutonium). The EU official is saying “you’ve screwed up, stop the coverup and do more.”
And what has the US response been on this?
Understood, but are we sure Fukushima is on eof the reactors using MOX?
That would only be bad to the Enemy and his minions.
Reactor 3 MOX..Yes.
“The power plant should never have been built so close to the coast”
Everything is close to the coast in Japan.
How sad, that the plants have stood up to one of the worst ‘quakes, and no one has anything good to say about it. Just nitpicks.
The muslim takeover of western europe is out of control too.
There’s a satalite photo, close up, on the net...shows actual destruction of all. Can’t recall where I saw...probably on FR somewhere.
I’m guilty of focusing on “out of control”; and then I reread the first part of the title—what a waste of time. Guess the EU guy wanted to his name in the media.
“(Reuters) - Europes energy chief warned on Wednesday of a further catastrophe at Japans nuclear site in the coming hours but his spokeswoman said he had no specific or privileged information on the situation.”
This is a highly irresponsible announcement from a government official.
I think that’s right but don’t think they’ve gone in. Not sure tho. Mostly relying on twitter news updates. Very busy day for me.
“It certainly should be”
No, it shouldn’t. Though it’s a grave mistake to view the federal government as responsible for first response, there is something to the idea that the president is more or less responsible for disasters that happen in his own country. Not so for foreign disasters. They can blah, blah, blah and send money, troops, and other forms of help. But it strains credulity to blame them for anything that happened the way they blame Bush for everything that happened.
Again, not that they were correct to do so with Bush. But they were more correct.
Get a grip.
