Fox news saying they left the plant
That’s new tech. Ecohobbits have blocked deployment of all new tech, leaving us with old tech. This is the result they hoped for: a real disaster that will kill nuclear power for another 30 years. So what if people die? Ecohobbits couldn’t care less...
When does Nikkei open, it’s going to be a bloodbath.
NHK interview with TEPCO engineers. appears to be #3 due to containment vessel damage. just damn.
And why are we panicking in the U.S.? You’d think they were in the heart of NYC the way people and the press are reacting.
I don’t think it’s a matter of not enough water, but rather not enough power/technology to move that water effectively to contain the burning rods.
Remember that these reactors were ruined, not by one of the strongest earthquakes on record, but rather by the sea.
If they’d been built on high ground, they’d probably still be generating electricity.
As I understand there is still a crew there.
Well, there's nobody at the plant now to get in your way, or tell you no, so I am sure volunteers are welcome (as long as they sign a no lawsuit agreement for radiation poisoning).
It always was.
“This kills nuclear energy in this country for the forseeable future. No amount of reasoned arguments will overcome this and any politician who tries will be committing career suicide. I doubt even Rushs intellectual power. will be able to turn the tide.”
Agreed.
Anyone who tries to argue otherwise, well, good luck.
The nuclear plants here that are currently running will serve out their useful lives, but we won’t be seeing many (any?) more of them.
Time to face reality: there’s only one solution for power generation in this country, and it’s coal, “clean” or otherwise.
We have the coal, we have the means to transport it, and the technology is simple, and safe.
Whether or not you mind the scent of a little coal smoke in the air, well - that’s up to you. I don’t mind it at all.
Conservatism is about seeing reality and understanding its implications and consequences. Anyone who doesn’t see Japan’s disaster for what it is, is a fool.
If things get really bad there, prevailing wind patterns may even affect us HERE.
The new slogan for the coal industry ought to be:
“Coal — if our plants break, you won’t radiate!”
It’s really that simple.
Just curious you all. If the core is exposed, people are evacuating Tokyo, then why is the Japanese equity market way up today, up 375 pts and nearly 5%?
Today, in the USA, the japanese stocks and etf’s almost closed higher, certainly not down 10%, and outperformed the us market?
Something is really amiss here, and if history is correct, this is just like the Gulf last year. Just a whole lot of duping going on.
Thanks for pointing this out. Given the hysteria that most of the press engages in, Hiroko-san sounds like an honorary 51st operator.
Watching Japanese Regulatory agency briefing now on NHK.

Nah, there are more depressing films out there. It was okay.
H bombs use a small plutonium core fission reaction to initiate a hydrogen fusion reaction. Fission reactions, like what we use in nuke plants, are highly radioactive as are their byproducts. Fusion reactions don’t have these issues, 95+ % of the radiation from an H bomb are from the plutonium core fission reaction.
The jap market is up as much as 5%. If this post is accurate, it should be down 20% or more.
I’d suggest folks follow the money. Today, in the US, investors took Japanese stocks higher all day from the low open. I’m telling you, the MONEY DOESN’T LIE.
This news must have come in after Nikkei closed for the day.
Most of the decisions are made based on politics.
There will not be a new nuclear reactor in the US in my lifetime.
The coal industry will be the winner in this case. You simply can't build windfarms and solar installations fast enough to make up for the nuclear power plants that will be shut down.
Another winner will be the oil companies...because you need a lot of oil to mine coal and to build windfarms and solar installations.
