Fuel Rods Damage At Fukushima's 2 Reactors Estimated At 70%, 33%
TOKYO (Kyodo)--An estimated 70 percent of the nuclear fuel rods have been damaged at the troubled No. 1 reactor of the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant and 33 percent at the No. 2 reactor, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Wednesday.
The reactors' cores are believed to have partially melted with their cooling functions lost after Friday's magnitude 9.0 earthquake rocked Fukushima Prefecture and other areas in northeastern and eastern Japan.

No, but both reactors are being injected with sea water.
Not efficient enough to prevent some core melt obviously.
IMHO, #2 is the greater problem, though there are some important unknowns with it.

Have you FReepers in Japan found the LIVE thread that SE Mom started this morning? It's a great compendium and running commentary of all the updates from Japan, especially regarding Fukushima. Links and info are being posted from a multitude of sources and it's been invaluable for finding everything in one place today. Link:

What the hell do you want the guy to do?
The less Obama is involved, the better.
This mindset of having a President or our Gov't fix and solve everything is absurd.

I hear he is betting on the sweet 16 and no we do not have functional leadership of any form. Sorry about that. We are on our own. Get used to it.

Only 7 days left to prevent the fuel in the reactor from reaching the center of the earth and detonating in a solar system ending event!!!!/sarc
I wish the media would cool it. This isn’t what is the main driver of the markets.

“This mindset of having a President or our Gov’t fix and solve everything is absurd”
While I agree with you in principle, there is still an element of official decorum and propriety that should be paid attention to. Even figurehead monarchs understand the importance of projecting the right tone at the right time. I personally think that an advanced version of ‘Turbo Tax’ could probably be used to run the Presidency more effectively than what we have seen lately. That said, the President does have a responsibility to project a proper respectful image.
