There's alot of confusion about taking iodine to ward off radiation poisoning. Dr. Brownstein is an expert in iodine/iodide usage and has written a blog specifically for the radiation.
Inorganic, non radiated iodine does not cause allergies. Most symptoms that people may connect to iodine and assume they are allergic are actually bromine detox symptoms.
Whether we're faced with radiation coming to this country or not, we should all take iodine for health. Deficiency in iodine is known to cause breast cancer, fibroids, thyroid cancer, ovarian and prostate cancer.

Since we are within the 10 mile radius of a nuclear power plant, I keep a betadine scrub on hand instead of KI tablets. If needed I would coat the left arm of everyone in the family with it from wrist to above elbow. if there is any allergic response it will be easier to manage this way- especially considering we would be travelling about 500 miles if there was a melt down.
I carry Potassium Iodide as opposed to potassium iodate.

There is a difference - especially as to the taste and ease of giving to children.
Cost varies substantially, be prepared as trade is a factor in times of stress.
Isn’t 1 drop 6.25mg? if so, you’re doing 50mg now. That’s not alot really, if you read up on the experts that’s what they recommend.
I don’t think adding seaweed to your diet can hurt but with all the things we’re up against, I don’t know if you can get enough in the seaweed.
I’m not worried at all, and really used this opportunity to talk to people about their need for iodine :)
Besides the 28 fatalities among rescue workers and employees of the power station due to very high doses of radiation (2.9 16 Gy), and 3 deaths due to other reasons (UNSCEAR 2000b), the only real adverse health consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe among approximately five million people living in the contaminated regions were the epidemics of psychosomatic afflictions that appear as diseases of the digestive and circulatory systems and other post-traumatic stress disorders such as sleep disturbance, headache, depression, anxiety, escapism, learned helplessness, unwillingness to cooperate, overdependence, alcohol and drug abuse and suicides. These diseases and disturbances could not have been due to the minute irradiation doses from the Chernobyl fallout (average dose rate of about 1 2 mSv/year), but they were caused by radiophobia (an deliberately induced fear of radiation) aggravated by wrongheaded administrative decisions and even, paradoxically, by increased medical attention which leads to diagnosis of subclinical changes that persistently hold the attention of the patient. Bad administrative decisions made several million people believe that they were victims of Chernobyl although the average annual dose they received from Chernobyl radiation was only about one third of the average natural dose. This was the main factor responsible for the economic losses caused by the Chernobyl catastrophe, estimated to have reached $148 billion by 2000 for the Ukraine and to reach $235 billion by 2016 for Belarus.
Observations on the Chernobyl Disaster and LNT
You are right. I hold the dropper horizontal. You get twice the drop and the way I use the dropper is just out of habit. Vertical 6.25 horizontal 12.5.
It’s bs, pure hysteria.
You want one clue why? Clue One: How high is the jetstream?
It’s kinda like super idiots punping up panic in idiots on threads like these.
Very healthy too.
The claim of 750 REMS on the west coast of the US is so utterly ridiculous!
It’s like saying everybody everywhere is going to die, and it’s not even 2012 yet!
It would be just as effective to perform some Aztec-Mayan ritual using a glass-skull, as stocking up on KI. IMO.
“The claim of 750 REMS on the west coast of the US is so utterly ridiculous!”
Yep. Hoax:

I bet I could make more money with a crystal-skull ritual than I could selling KI.
Hmm, saw Crystal Skull vodka yesterday...that and some candles..bet I could charge $50 if I promised protection against airborne alpha particles.
What I wrote was just my general preparedness for my family as one who years ago worked with radiation in medicine. We live within the evacuation zone for our local power plant. I don’t need your clues, I have my own medical training.
Are you so sure rudeness saves lives?
In any, you evidently need some clues. Clues you don’t know you need to know. Unless of course, death, is the goal.
The Japanese government is handing out iodine pills to flood the thyroid gland with ordinary iodine in hopes of preventing it from taking up the radioactive form.
Dr. Brenner said the iodine pills were protective, but were a bit of a myth because their use is based on the belief that the risk is from inhaling radioactive iodine. Actually, he said, 98 percent of peoples exposure comes from milk and other dairy products.
The way radioactive iodine gets into human beings is an indirect route, he said. It falls to the ground, cows eat it and make milk with radioactive iodine, and you get it from drinking the milk. You get very little from inhaling it. The way to prevent it is just to stop people from drinking the milk. He said that the epidemic of thyroid cancer around Chernobyl could have been prevented if the government had immediately stopped people from drinking milk.
Crops can also be contaminated. I wouldnt be eating an apple from a tree close to the plant, Dr. Brenner said.
I didn’t buy imported ham after Chernobyl.
