If you were in the local area, that would be warranted and, in fact, gov't officials have said they are making it available to locals near the plant in Japan. Keep in mind they ordered evacuations of a 10km radius many hours ago and just extended the existing evacuation era for the 2nd plant to 10km as well.

Do you need KI in the lower 48, 5000 miles away? No, certainly not now. You'd be doing far more harm than good.

Picked up a tincture of Iodine tonight. Last bottle they had in the pharmacy. No Potassium Iodide tablets. Any suggestions on safe dosage ? Wont need it until Sunday from what I gather being here on the west coast US. Was just gonna put a few drops in a glass of water. It is 2 % iodine and not intended for internal use, but its all a whole lot of people like me will be able to get their hands onto for awhile. I have used it on my skin before and felt my thyroid get numb. So perhaps just rubbing it on my arm will do okay ?
