Tsunami waves began rolling into Hawaii early Friday, with readings of between 6 and 8 feet expected in some areas following the giant earthquake that struck Japan.
Communities along much of the U.S. West Coast were under tsunami warnings, too.
The first impact in Hawaii was felt shortly after 3:07 a.m. local time (8:07 a.m. ET), according to Hawaii State Civil Defense, which issued a tsunami warning.
At 3:30 a.m., television images in Honolulu showed an increase in water coming ashore.
The National Weather Service said the waves could hit Oregon and California between 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. local time (10:15-10:30 a.m. ET).
Honolulu is planning for several contingencies, because it is not certain how large the waves could be and where they may rush inland, Mayor Peter Carlisle told CNN.
"It is a very difficult situation to confront," Carlisle said.
Hawaiian Public Radio news director Bill Dorman told CNN some roads were closed as a precaution. CNN meteorologist Rob Marciano said he expected the waves to first strike the island of Kauai.
Hawaiian emergency officials reminded residents that tsunami evacuation maps can be found in front of their telephone directories. People were being advised not to make unnecessary phone calls and a coastal evacuation was conducted.

There have been a number of large earthquakes over the past week or so. Something’s happening and it doesn’t sound good. Most were in the South Pacific. China also had a 5.4, I think it was yesterday and it collapsed something like 1000 structures and killed 24 people.

Hawaii also has had a pretty good sized eruption from that volcano that’s been active for many years.

NOTE TO SELF: When you see the ocean pull back 300+ meters leaving the reef exposed, RUN LIKE HELL for high ground!

The Pacific Northwest is the only reagion on the Pacific Ring of Fire not to have had a Major 8+ Earthquake in recent history. I’m afraid it won’t be long.

I use those as fire starter.
Prayers to all in harm's way. Stay safe and head for high ground. I have close family on Oahu, but their house is up high.

No no no. I live one block from the ocean in the tsunami zone and have been glued to the TV all night while I had everything ready to run for it but it did hit but only a couple of feet above normal. (thank God) Big scare for all of us here in Hawaii though. I am on Maui and it has been an hour since the first signs hit us. No big waves and no damage at all on any of the islands that I have heard of.

Forgot to mention that we had a 4.5 earthquake last night our selves. It was on the south side of the Big Island. No one even paid any attention to that with an expected tsunami coming in from Japan.

Doesn’t seem like the waves in Hawaii will be that bad. However, if I had a tsunami warning for my area, I don’t think I’d be hanging around the coastal area (as it is apparent people are doing in the live feed), no matter how high their vantage point happens to be.

This is the second false alarm in one year. After about the 10th one I bet you’d be pretty inclined to hang at the beach.

Under warning here on central Oregon Coast. Local radio station advising if you're 50+ feet above sea level, stay put, so that's what we're doing.
Portlant TV station reporting that lookie-loo idiots are heading out here from the Valley.
