Five runaway Democratic Wisconsin state senators made a pit stop Tuesday at a Grayslake hotel where they watched a budget address by Republican Gov. Scott Walker.
Wisconsin's Democratic nomadic senators who surfaced at Grayslake's Comfort Suites are among 14 legislators who bolted for Illinois on Feb. 17 in protest of Walker's proposal that has infuriated public employees.
After the senators left, a vote has been unable to occur on Walker's plan to have public workers contribute more to their pensions and health insurance, while losing the ability to collectively bargain benefits and work conditions.
We must work together to bring our spending together with reality, Walker said Tuesday in outlining a budget that calls for a package of $1.5 billion in cuts while sidestepping mass layoffs, tax hikes or furloughs.
Senators Mark Miller, Chris Larson and Fred Risser were in a Comfort Suites meeting room to watch Walker on a feed from Milwaukee's WTMJ-TV. They were joined by senators Julie Lassa and Dave Hansen at a post-speech news conference.
Miller, the Wisconsin senate's Democratic minority leader from Monona, quietly chuckled during a part of Walker's speech when the governor said the proposed budget would bring property tax relief.
After the governor spoke, Miller didn't commit to when the AWOL senators would go home. He said discussions are occurring between legislative leaders and Walker's office.
The governor's budget was a continued assault on the middle class of the state of Wisconsin, Miller said. He is balancing the budget on the backs of the working class and ordinary taxpayers.
Risser said the Grayslake Comfort Suites was selected by staff members as a place to watch Walker's speech together, but they were not spending the night there. The senators didn't say where they planned to bunk.
Senator Dave Hansen of Green Bay, who noted his district includes Lambeau Field, said he and the others have been paying their own tabs for lodging and other necessities since fleeing Wisconsin and bouncing around Illinois.
I'm taking a (financial) hit, Hansen said.
Senators have rejected offers of financial assistance from groups and individuals, Risser said. He said some of the senators have stayed in private homes, as well as hotels.
Risser, whose district is in Madison, said the Wisconsin politicians will return at some point.
One of our main goals was to bring attention to what is happening, Risser said.

Do Democrats like Miller go to a special Communist indoctrination school "Orwellian Edition" to learn to speak such claptrap, or does it come pre-scripted so that all they need to do is sound out the phonetic spellings from the printout?
WHAT??!!! Green Bay is now hallowed ground, Senator. Better get back there and do your duty, or I'll sic Clay Matthews on you - and it won't be pretty!
If I didn't have to work I would harass these bastards with a bullhorn like Al Sharpton. I would get my coronet out of storage and play it as loud as possible. Or borrow bongo drums from church and start playing them since the lefties like doing that at the WI State Capitol.
I dunno why African Bongo Drums are a favorite thing of lefties, but wherever these bastards are staying I would DIE to be loud and obnoxious and just make their stay here in Illinois as miserable as possible.
In other news please call your rep even if they are a RAT like mine and tell them to shun Lisa over her FOID desires. Even the lady I spoke to from my Rat's office is against Lisa and says it puts a target on our backs.
I am getting my FOID card today AND then going to Bass Pro Shop in Bolingbrook and buying a gun and ammo.
Mention the MASSACRE in Conn. which was done by white people this will get you sympathy from libs who want to hear about WHITE criminals.
Use their stupidity against them!!!
What is the process for recall? How long does it take?
I would suggest Walker follow through with any threats and stick to any deadlines because at this point if he waffles all conservatives take a hit. He'll need to change his name to Newt.
I don't like the idea of the trumped up charges any more than anyone else, but hey - the Dems would do it to us (I give you Tom DeLay - Exhibit One).
Sounds like he's ready to come back.
“You don’t follow through on a threat, you might as well go home.”
I love my children, but I found out early on that if I was going to get the results I desired from the little dears, I would have to carry through on promises AND threats. The Republican Party just cannot understand this principle, and, once again, it’s losing me and my checkbook. (Not that either one is a great loss, but last time I looked they needed all the money they could scrape up.)
Tell the Republicans to go on back to The Club and arrange for a good tee time; they don’t have what it takes to govern. They soil their undies every time someone calls them mean spirited or union busters.
LOL! Get some bongo drums. I like that idea. ;-)
I sure hope that the people that want to “play hardball” don't get in the way of those that are actually fighting this battle...and currently winning.
The following video is very disturbing. The union mobs chased down and cornered our very own Senator Grothman. Listen carefully to what is being shouted. It really shows the mentality of these people. If the TEA party had done this we would have been persecuted by the media.
I thank God Senator Grothman was not harmed. It could have turned very ugly. We need to show our support. Please email or call Senator Grothman and let him know you stand behind him.

Wisconsin Republican Glenn Grothman was mobbed by a group of union thugs using horns, drums & chants as he approached the capitol Monday to go to work. Grothman was held for several minutes and was forced to call for assistance.
Chants of “SHAME, SHAME, SHAME” turn into “YOU SUCK, YOU SUCK.”
This is the same type people that want squatter rights to be back INSIDE the Capitol again!
Where is the national & local media coverage of this “PEACEFUL & RESPECTFUL CIVILITY?”
Where is ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, NEWSWEEK, MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL??? (.....crickets chirping......so much easier to ignore the truth than ACTUALLY practice journalistic ethics of “honest” reporting the WHOLE STORY. This is NATIONAL news within seconds if that mob were Tea Party people. Stay classy, lefty biased media.)
And I sincerely hope you’re right and I’m wrong.
I despair when a deadline passes and all I can hear is crickets. Heck, I never understood why protesters were allowed to be disruptive or to bed down in the state capitol. The voters of Wisconsin are adults; they know what’s happening. What they need to see is some RESOLVE on the part of Republicans. Referring to Wisconsin’s governor, I like to be able to quote Jethro from “Beverly Hillbillies”, “This establishment cat means what he says!”
I asked about that hours ago.... We’re approaching a second 24 hours after the first 24-hour deadline. Big Media will start the taunting at any time with polls saying support is swinging to the Rat cowards.
Shut down their state credit cards.
Somebody said that Walker has the power to declare a Senate seat vacant after 30 days, is that correct? I hadn’t heard that.
I’m taking a (financial) hit, Hansen said.
Too bad. It’s not like the taxpayers are taking a hit.
Not sure here, but I believe that legislative bodies have the authority to Impeach their own members for cause. Since an impeachment hearing is not an appropriation or spending activity then the people that show up (Republicans) could be the body of the whole and vote for impeachment (i.e 50%, 2/3rd, what ever the requirement). Then the Governor could appoint and fill the vacancies.
The fleebagger plan is to stall until a few RINOs can be bought off and/or intimidated by the unions.
