No junk food for food stamps, Rubio [D-CA] says

This week, state Sen. Michael Rubio will introduce legislation that would prohibit food stamps from being used to purchase "junk food" or prepared meals at fast-food restaurants.

"The question is what should we be using taxpayer funds to purchase," the Bakersfield Democrat said Tuesday. "In my opinion, we should be focusing on what people need, not what they want."

Those needs include foods found in the traditional food pyramid, he said, including breads and cereals, meats, beans, nuts, dairy products and other protein sources, and lots of fruits and vegetables.

Rubio's idea is not yet an official Senate bill. But it came to light Tuesday when he appeared before the Fresno County Board of Supervisors to argue against a proposal that would have allowed disabled and homeless recipients in that county to use food stamps -- now accessed through a debit card -- to purchase restaurant foods.

Not really no. I view this as short term until my business gets going the way it should.

So basically, you are just another moocher on society, not a producer, nor are you an honest worker, doing honest labor for a producer.

Frankly, it appears obvious to me, that you actually participated in enabling the corruption of our society. Because you stupidly think you deserve a high salary simply because you paid money for “higher education”.

What specific professional certification or skill did your expensive “higher” education grant you?

LEO and social services?
Seriously?
And how much did you pay for your “higher education” to become an entry level LEO or social service worker?
Was it worth the price you paid?

With your expensive advanced education, surely you must be an incredible leader in your local community, should any natural or man made disaster strike...
LOL!

I have no idea how much dollar value food stamps might provide per person, per month. But it would seem that it should not be enough finance someone eating out, even fast food, two or three times per day. Most working people budget how often they eat out, and I’d guess a food stamp recipient could use up their monthly amount well before the next month’s amount is available.

Back in the day, 1972, there was a “commodities food program”. One did not get stamps, or cards one got an actual box or two of food, including a 5 pound brick of what looked like Velveeta, but was honest to God cheddar.

Only time in my life I’ve committed welfare fraud. I tried, no way I could buy this stuff and it was so much better than sto’bought!

Totally agree with the concept; provide food, not food stamps. In Texas we have a “card” instead of “stamps” Whoopee, the junkies still trade them at 50 cents on the dollar, just like the old days. Somebody at the bar gets cheap ribeye, junkie gets cash for (meth, coke, fill in the blank).

What the hell is your drivel about? Do you work at Sav-A-Lot and am bitter about people that contribute to society? I work in this job because I have bills to pay. I’m not going to give you my resume but I’ve saved lived and taken dangerous people off the street. I have helped people and fed the poor. I have fought for freedom and made your neihborhood safe. I have worked in a jail and fought the worst of the worst and release those false imprisoned. I am an MBA student at 40 years old after fighting an alcohol addiction. I’ve slept on benches, the shelter, and in a tent less than three years ago. Keep your comments in check asshole. You never know who you are talking to. I’ve paid my price and I care. I am not a mooch...

I didn’t mean to come off so harsh. I apologize for that. My point was that I’m compassionate but I don’t like what I do(hence seeking an advanced degree). I just don’t take kindly to being rideculed for making 31,720 and enduring abuse by people that contribute nothing. Do you see me point. The real non producers cuss at me treat me like dirt if I sanction their benfits for not cooperating with TANF laws. You don’t know my world. I’m just trying to feed myself and put gas in my $800 car. Catch my drift?

That is a dumb statement. I’m in hurricane zone but it doesn’t take a 3rd grade education to recognize a 7 day warning. What’s your point genius?

I remember being in the Navy, sending a good chunk of cash home to my family and living on a shoestring in San Diego, going to Safeway for stuff like chicken, bread, milk and eggs — and watching the guy ahead of me buying Doritos, cokes and Twinkies — and paying with food stamps.

It irked the heck out of me then.

Well if the cashier KNOWS that to be true (restock the gas station up the road) then I’m sure she can tattle to some state agency. That has got to be illegal.

I buy mine at sam’s club in 25 or 50lb bags. Very cheap and goes a long way for a big family.

Perhaps I am too much of an optimist and I will grant you that. Furthermore, I think that most liberals are elitists. I do believe that a good number of folks will try to do right of they know how to do it. Ignorance is the best tool that liberals have.

It is a given that the electorate of the USA is not going to let folks starve if there is any alternative.

The liberal alternative is to give the poor a fish; the conservative alternative is to teach the poor to fish.

While there is some quick merit in a “Root pig or starve” take, the American public will not stand for “Root pig or starve and let your kids starve too”.
