Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Saturday welcomed a pledge by the Egyptian military to maintain the peace treaty between the two countries. Netanyahu said the treaty "is a cornerstone of peace and stability in the Middle East."
His announcement came after Egypt's military rulers promised the country will abide by its international agreements, a nod to allay concerns that Egypt's peace deal with Israel could be threatened following the ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
The military has also asked the current government, appointed by Mubarak, to continue operating until a new one is formed. It also says it is committed to eventually handing over power to an elected administration.

Only if the military holds power for good.
They won’t.
Me also, I hope this is true, but fear it isn’t.
It’s a great relief, comforting to be informed of their intention to honor their agreement.
One positive aspect is that some high ranking Egyptian military officers have a good relationship with the US military and to a certain extent, the Israeli military. They also know that this relationship puts their necks on the chopping block if radicals take over the government. Simple self preservation dictates that these guys are not going to just sit back and let their country go the way of Iran. That doesn’t mean they will be successful but I hope for everyone’s sake, that they are.
The power was handed over to the military, and yet you see our media calling it a coup. I’ll be damned if I can disagree with your take on things. Our president and media will destroy the army over there as surely as they did Mubarak.
I give it a few days at best, before the same people take to the street in order to destroy the military’s influence on things.
Look for the big O to call for a firm timetable, then complain that it isn't soon enough.
Let's face it. This is a Muslimn state...just like Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan. Do you really think the people will make gains?? And just how does that happen?
As soon as we insist they allow gays...
The Egyptian Free Officer Corps has ruled Egypt since 1952. Nasser was a General, Sadat was a General and Mubarak was a General. The next guy up will be a General.
