Mubarak is gone, now what?

Okay gang, it looks like we had a open revolt of millions in Egypt today and now that Mubarak is gone(possibly), now what?

We all know that Egypt(namely Mubarak)for good or bad was a bulwark against the a radical takeover of Egypt and thus the Suez Canal as well as his maintaining of a peace between his nation and Israel.

Now the United State must look forward to a uncertain future for Egypt as well the region as a whole. Will the military and their Mubarak appointed VP survive until new elections or will the Muslim Brotherhood convince the same young people that he is more of the same and that radical Islam is the path to true freedom in their opinion?

True democracy is three wolves and a sheep deciding what is for lunch.

Baa, humbug!

This will become more evident as they purchase new military hardware and will eventually lead to a nuclear Egypt openly hostile to Israel.

Then look for Israel to have tanks on the Suez Canal befoe long. If your scenario comes close to reality, bad times are coming. I do happen to agree with you, btw.

Can you guess what happens next?...

Cairo become a smoking, glassed over ruin, along with all Egyptian military bases?

Trueblackman:"We all know that Egypt(namely Mubarak)for good or bad was a bulwark against the a radical takeover of Egypt"

Captain Kirk:We don't "know" anything of the sort. During the past three decades, Mubarak, and allowed them to build up a vast and well organized "charitable" and political network, even while he suppressed, often through sadistic torture, non-MB dissenters. If a radical takeover occurs, the men to blame are Mubarak and his U.S. presidential patrons since the 1980s (and before).

By "radical", I assume you both mean "islamist".

I think that the best defense against the MB is a culture of individual rights. Torture and speech repression do violence to this culture, thereby strengthening the MB.

Similarly, the threat of the MB strengthens the appeal of a secular police state.

Egypt is likely only 10 years behind Turkey on the path to total islamic pathology.

How many years before Turkey arrives at TOP?

I’m sure other allies are scared spitless.

At this point I think it is safe to say that America has no allies. We only have enemies.

Some hate us more than others, but I don't see any country that can count on our loyalty nor can I see any country that would have our backs.

By becoming "friends" to our committed enemies, we have become enemies to our friends. You don't keep friends by pandering to your enemies nor do you make friends of your enemies by pandering to them. You do nothing more than to make everyone distrustful of your loyalties.

Honestly, regimes that need torture and repression of their own citizens to keep going are destined to fail. Egypt was always a time bomb, and no amount of bribes or foreign aid were ever gonna change that.

I agree. These protests could lead to an improved, rights-respecting government with even better immunity to sharia.

Right. Hence the rest of my post:

Or, maybe they should be referred to henceforth as “former allies.”

Maybe now we’re allied with Iran and Syria. Part of the new, much more potent Axis of Evil.

If it is accurate that 85% of Egyptians favor imposition of Sharia, I guess a free and fair election will give it to them?

But not for long, assuming free and fair elections continue.

It could become worse, but it could also become better for everyone - if a true secular free republic emerges in Egypt.

Well, it’s simple really. Everyone in Egypt gets a very good paying job... they all start Monday. For those who choose not to work, there will be a generous welfare plan put in place by next week. High-speed Internet will be installed in all homes over the weekend, and new cars will be issued to everyone (GM cars of course). Everyone will live happily ever after.

My teenage daughters have friends who recently moved to Lebanon. Their dad passed away last year, and their mom got a job in Lebanon. They are Christians, and I worry about them. I know one of them has posted on facebook about being scared and wishing she was back in the states.
