Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords spoke for the first time since she was shot in the forehead, her spokesman said Wednesday, yet another significant milestone in her recovery from a traumatic brain injury.
Giffords spoke first several days ago and is speaking "more and more," spokesman C.J. Karamargin said Wednesday. He didn't know what her first words were, but said at breakfast one morning she asked for toast.
"She's working very hard and it's paying off," he told The Associated Press. "We're elated at this. We always knew Gabby is a fighter and that she's not going to let this thing win. And you know, every day is proof of that."
Six people, including a 9-year-old girl and a federal judge, were killed in the attack outside a grocery store where Giffords was meeting with constituents. Thirteen people, including Giffords, were injured.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Giffords' husband Mark Kelly said his wife had her appetite back and was eating three times a day, "even though it's hospital food."
"It is hard to believe that only one month has passed since Gabrielle was shot," he wrote. "The doctors say she is recovering at lightning speed considering her injury but they aren't kidding when they say this is a marathon process."
He said "there are encouraging signs every day," pointing to her renewed appetite.
"Your prayers are being heard, so don't stop," he wrote.

When my father had his stroke and was recovering, the only words he knew for sure that he was saying correctly and in the right order were all the four letter ones. :-)
Well, it’s just a hunch. The actual evidence points the other way but there’s some conservative blood in those veins. :-) And sometimes something like this can get it pumping.... Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.
Thank you. My sentiments exactly (EggsAckley).
What you said, FRiend.
Agree with your take on this. Her husband said ‘Gabby would want me to fly’ referring to commanding the next Shuttle. I hope she is doing well but the actual comments about her recovery are much less encouraging than Big Media’s spin on those comments. She may have said the word ‘toast’ but I doubt she said ‘I’d like toast for breakfast’. Prayers up for her complete recovery.
And she said Damn I got a splitting headache! :-)!>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
BUahahahahahah. Not Really.
She said ,” Eff that Obama, Jared Loughner and his handlers. They were supposed to just hit the JUDGE!!!!!”
( The judge had just issued a restraining order against the feds seizing 401(k) monies via executive order of the president.)
That frontal lobe with its social inhibitions function wasn’t working that well while you were drugged?
I’m glad to hear Gifford is talking, which means she can probably quickly relearn her vocabulary if it was lost to the damage. May takes months or a couple years. I pray God grants her healing and repair in weeks.
At the moment we have no real defense against paranoid schizophrenics who are attracted to violence.
Thank you God.
Not that I’mdefending the joke (very poor taste) but compared to how quick the Challenger jokes and Natalie Wood jokes started, I’m surprised it took this long.
Yes. God bless her and her entire family too!
I hope she gets better ASAP. That said, I don’t think we are getting the truth about her, and probably never will. Even if she were to not be well enough to resume her duties, she would, if the Dems can help it. They have been a disgrace throughout this process and I blame Obama especially, for letting it go on.

Prayers for the continued recovery for the good lady.
While I don’t even “play a doctor on TV”, I do think the MDs should
have been more restrained on Giffords’ pace of recovery. I fear people
think she’ll be back debating on the floor of the House very soon.
If she ever does stage such a magnificent recovery, I will stand and applaud.
But I admit I’m am a born skeptic-in-the-heart.
Here’s hoping I’m proved wrong in a major way.
Maybe she’ll make a comeback like the soldier in the closing (IIRC)
episode of “Band of Brothers” that got a head wound from a drunken soldier
after killing a Brit and other soldier(s).
Seeing Spiers (sp?) push a German neurosurgeon to treat and save the soldier
is a lesson in how to save a comrade. Sometimes you’ve got to seriously
compel a physician.
And you might need to use a 1911 .45 caliber pistol to compel the doctor a bit.
