"Dozens of American cities throughout the industrial Great Lakes states and Midwest have lost half of their populations over the course of one generation -- places like Cleveland, Youngstown, Detroit, Warren, Buffalo and Flint. This is the first time that so many cities have lost half of their populations in such a short amount of time since the Plague struck Europe in 1348........."

“A lot of it was war, and the refugees they generate.”
Yes, but my problem is this...and I am not arguing with you...I just need to get to an intellectual bottom of this which has fascinated me for long time: About war: Folks were either on foot or the more lucky few were on horseback. Refugees took longer to move about. The plague hit quick and fast at almost at the same time everywhere.
Good for you.
My neighbors are from Denmark. They escaped in the 80’s and know first hand the effects of socialism.
Tell your little socialist co-worker you’re a Capitalist and watch her head explode. It’s well worth the elevated blood pressure you’ll get from her tirade ;D!
Wikipedia isn't the most authoritative site, but in this case it's probably right: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Death
It took a couple of years to spread, and followed the trade routes. It appeared more than once, but the 1348-50 episode was the worst.
One infected person fleeing from a plague city on horseback can move a pretty good distance quickly, leaving infected fleas every place he stops to sleep. A dozen ships leaving an infected port in Turkey could hit towns from Italy to England to Germany in a few months.
There's not much special in how fast this moved in a time of poor harvests and poor health.
Democrats, rats, fleas, plague, same thing
Same for our area as well (NJ); whole areas in our cities are ghost towns, and nobody in their right mind even drives through those areas when the sun starts to dip...
As I understand it Habitats for Humanity has been working in Detroit dismantling homes. Seriously.
Not really; even if they’re keeping them in the Blue Zone, the states themselves are losing electoral votes due to those population losses. It certainly is less damaging in terms of the electoral college; it has forced Dems to try to carve out “red” states to come up with more than half of the electoral votes (and is getting worse for them with each census).
Do you know how expensive it is to live there?
That’s exactly how these morons think; here in NJ we’re getting a real wakeup call with police/fire/teacher layoffs, crappy snow removal, etc. Some people are going to have a hard time adjusting to the new, more fiscally responsible NJ. I thought the urban dumps would be insulated from this because it is politically incorrect to take anything at all from a city, but Newark, Jersey City, and Camden have ALL laid off a number of police officers. This doesn’t bode well for those cities at all; those police were the only reason some whites dawdled in those places after dark as consumers.
They aren’t committed to liberalism, but to greed. If you rob Peter to pay Paul, you will always have the support of Paul. These same minorities are among the most opposed to “gay marriage”, hardly a liberal position.
...places like Cleveland, Youngstown, Detroit, Warren, Buffalo and Flint. The drop in Flint is perhaps most noticeable. Thanks Leisler.
Not completely true about liberals, since Obama took over, business in Washington DC is booming! ;)
I remember seeing all those places, I grew up in Detroit and didn't move out until a year after I married.. At that time, to buy a house in the city was more expensive than buying in a new suburban sub-division. It sure isn't like that anymore...Detroit was once a beautiful place. Many called it the Venice of the country...You wouldn't believe that looking at it today...
Example: The first house we bought after marriage was a 3 bedroom ranch about 20 miles N. of Detroit and it cost only 13,900.00 sticker shock: That was in 1960.
You couldn't buy any home in Detroit for that amount of money....its sad what has become of that place...
Three conjectures on underlying causes of Plague in Europe in 1348.
The Little Ice Age began in 1315 and the colder, wetter weather and famine was stressful to the rats and the fleas jumped off them looking for a better meal.
A germ that affected the fleas feeding mechanism and left them unable to digest their meals, was able to affect the fleas more in the Little Ice Age; and the ‘starving’ fleas jumped off the rats trying to find a better meal.
Bamboo dies off in great swaths every 80-100 years or so before regenerating and the rats that live in the groves then vacate it looking for sustenance, taking their fleas with them. Multiple species of bamboo may have coincidentally died off in Asia around the same time and thus the rats left migrating West to Europe, taking their infected fleas with them.
Interesting facts about the depopulation, but one of the sadder things about reading trade magazines now is that every "thoughtful" article is about how the government needs to spend more on whatever cause the magazine supports.
Only if your 'everywhere' is the twenty mile circle around your home.
"Bubonic plague broke out in Central Asia in 1338/39 and reached China and India in 1346.... The epidemic reached the Black Sea port of Caffa by 1347. Fleeing Genoese ships then carried the fleas and their host to Constantinople, Italy, and Marseilles.
"From the prosperous Italian cities, the Black Death spread in waves over western Europe....The plague entered Britain through several ports, among them Bristol, where the plague swept ashore in August 1348. ...By July 1349, the Black Death had reached Scotland,..."

The Fabulous Ruins of Detroit
http://www.detroityes.com/home.htm
A sad and amazing photolog of the demise of a once-great American city.
Declined to one-half of it’s peak population.
Even National Public Radio has had reports on the misery of this place
in the last year, including proposals to simply bulldoze blocks of the
town so that expenses of city services can be ended.
And this was a city as mentioned by Newt Gingrich once had the highest
average salary of any major American city.
Democrats and Unions sure fixed that d-mned good!!!
PS: Detroiters/Michiganders (understandably) invaded my home state of
Oklahoma during the “Oil Boom in the late 1970s-early 1980s.
Just like the Califorians invading Texas these days and the “Massholes”
that flee Taxachussets to Vermont and New Hamhaphsire to escape
CONFISCATORY state income tax...
they bring their liberal pathology with them.
Then impose it on the inhabitants of the state (organism) that they have infected.
Too bad places like Texas, Vermont and New Hampshire didn’t study history.
and erected highway signs like the one at the eastern border of California
during the Depression.
“No Jobs Here. Go Home.”

How could a city with no Republicans be screwed by Republicans?

That might be the FR post of the month.
If not of the year.

“How could a city with no Republicans be screwed by Republicans?”
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
As long as Republicans exist anywhere they are ruining the whole world merely by their existence. On the other hand Democrats are forgiven if everything they do makes things worse because they had GOOD INTENTIONS. Sounds crazy but it seems to be the way these people “reason”. My idiot stepson actually told me that he doesn’t care whether socialism has ever worked anywhere else, he wants it because it is right. Liberalism REALLY IS A MENTAL DISORDER, never forget it or doubt it.
