MUNICH, Germany (AFP) British Prime Minister David Cameron condemned his country's long-standing policy of multiculturalism as a failure Saturday, saying it was partly to blame for fostering Islamist extremism.
In a speech to the Munich Security Conference, Cameron said many young British Muslims were drawn to violent ideology because they found no strong collective identity in Britain.
Signalling a marked change in policy towards ethnic and religious minorities, he urged a "more active, muscular liberalism" where equal rights, the rule of law, freedom of speech and democracy were actively promoted.

Many criticised his timing, on the day that 2,000 members of the far-right English Defence League (EDL) held a rally in the ethnically mixed city of Luton to protest against the spread of Islam in Britain.
Cameron did not mention the EDL but a lawmaker for the opposition Labour party, Sadiq Khan, accused him of "writing propaganda for the EDL".
The prime minister's speech was the first of his premiership on Islamist extremism, a major concern for British governments since four home-grown suicide bombers attacked London in 2005, killing 52 people.
It echoed controversial comments made by Merkel last year, when she also called multiculturalism a failure, ..
Cameron, who took power in May 2010, argued that "under the doctrine of state multiculturalism, we have encouraged different cultures to live separate lives, apart from each other and the mainstream".
"All this leaves some young Muslims feeling rootless. And the search for something to belong to and believe in can lead them to this extremist ideology," he said.
...
"A passively tolerant society says to its citizens: as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone. It stands neutral between different values," he said.

Sooo . . . . My momma taught me to clean up any messes I made. How do the Brits plan to do this now?
I know how I’d do it, but it wouldn’t win me any liberal or Islamic friends.
Cameron rocks. I watched his presentation and he has some mega cajones!
“British Prime Minister David Cameron condemned his country’s long-standing policy of multiculturalism as a failure”
Well, obviously the guy is a very slow learner, but let’s hope the Brits are starting to awaken in time to save their country.
“Signalling a marked change in policy towards ethnic and religious minorities, he urged a “more active, muscular liberalism” where equal rights, the rule of law, freedom of speech and democracy were actively promoted.”
The “marked change” they need is mass deportations and a halt to all third-world immigration.
Or, in the words of those who have encouraged the multicultural program, "Mission accomplished."
Multiculturalism erodes the national identity of the native culture, leaving it vulnerable to those who are unapologetically certain of their own identity.
Correct. Just as the Marxist/Leftist/One-world government mob wants it. This is but one of the tools they use to weaken strong countries. Time to put a stop to it. Kudos to PM Cameron.
The British and the Germans are starting to draw the line on their Muslim “immigrants.” That they are throwing the politically correct “multiculturalism” under the bus — and siding with Mubarak — at least until he can transition out in Egypt UNLIKE Obama who wants him out NOW — shows they no longer trust the Obama regime, and they no longer believe he will be there for them should things get bad. Nor can we expect them to be there for us, so long as Obama remains in the White House, and Progressives/Democrats in charge of the Government.
That's an understatement. As a doctrine it obliterates our national culture. It only appears as erosion to the extent that it is resisted, but as resisters are increasingly vilified and displaced by indoctrinated youth, the process accelerates. It's erosion the way a sand castle is eroded by the high tide.
"All this leaves some young Muslims feeling rootless. And the search for something to belong to and believe in can lead them to this extremist ideology,"
Their own policy backfired and now is coming back to cause harm to their country.
If immigrants cannot or will not assimilate, its really just an invasion. Throw them out!
The reason that immigrants do not adopt English culture is because there is nothing to take root in.
The arid secularism of Britain is a vast, empty wasteland. Only a tiny percent of British go to church every week, and most of them are very old. The young worship the bottle and vacations in Spain.
No wonder the immigrants in the United Kingdom find more sustenance in sharia law and radical terrorism.
An editorial on Aljazeera (which is far more objective than the msm) last night pointed out that 0 is quickly loosing friends as evidenced by the EU deciding to go their own way on the Egypt crisis.
Politicians are notorious for their actions falling far short of their impressive sounding rhetoric. I'll believe he 'rocks' or not when I see some actual policies and results...
shows me they know Obama has joined with the muslim brotherhood and that he is a fraud
This is great news. The Brits are pretty liberal compared to the U.S. so this is a sign of hope. I hope they can get the UK back in time, it’s pretty rough in western europe, I know first hand. That’s what PC thinking got them, a looming disaster.
Failure? Depends on the culture.
