Revolutions usually start with enthusiasm and end in tears. In the case of the Middle East, the tears could be avoided if President Obama stands firmly by the values that got him elected. Although American power and influence in the world have declined, our allies and their armies look to us for direction.

As a committed advocate of democracy and open society, I cannot help but share in the enthusiasm that is sweeping across the Middle East. I hope President Obama will expeditiously support the people of Egypt. My foundations are prepared to contribute what they can. In practice, that means establishing resource centers for supporting the rule of law, constitutional reform, fighting corruption and strengthening democratic institutions in those countries that request help in establishing them, while staying out of those countries where such efforts are not welcome.

To be against a positive democratic move in the ME just because a democrat is in the White House is to be a RAT onesself. This all happened because of Bush and my impression is that rather than be happy for the progress (and yes, these things are never certain) there are a lot of people around here who can’t get themselves out of the mindset that somehow we need to find something bad so we can blame Obama. Just so you understand, I am making the point that Egypt has a democratic system already. The elected leader (albeit a strongman type of ruler) has agreed to stand aside and let the country select a new leader in the regularly scheduled elections in September.

Obama is fanning the flames to have an extra-democtratic solution to the Egyptian leadership crisis - to step around the process already in place and allow the mob to dictate who will lead the country, without giving the rest of the country (the ones not rioting) a voice in the process.

Your invocation of the American revolution is a strawman fallacy, and is repulsive. I was making the explicit point that Egypt already has a democratic method for transferring power. That is hardly appropriate to the colonies in 1776.

Muslims, which Muslim country? I think you mean colonial troops for the British. However, Muslim countries were pro-Nazi. We invaded Iran. The Muslim Brotherhood and Ba'athists supported the Nazis.
AS for the Communists, it'sa complex black mark. The USSR was funcitonally allied to Nazi Germany from August 1939 until May 1941, when they split up Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. Communists in France and other allied countries tried to sabotage the allied war efforts. They only flipped when Nazi Germany invaded the USSR. They weren't our allies. They were the enemy of the enemy, who used us.

I opposed Bush's Democracy for the Muslim Brotherhood Project and Iranian influence, just as I oppose Obamas. Wislon was an evil fool. Pick up Samuel Huntington's Clash of Civilizations.
