WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government is telling half of the U.S. population to drastically cut their daily salt intake.
That's the advice to consumers - and the food industry - as the government issues new dietary guidelines, which are the recommendations behind the popular food pyramid.
For the first time, the Agriculture and Health and Human Services departments, which issue the guidelines every five years, are telling people who are 51 and older, all African-Americans and anyone suffering from hypertension, diabetes or chronic kidney disease to reduce daily sodium intake to little more than half a teaspoon.

Unless there is a medically diagnosed reason to limit salt, then there is no reason at all.
Research has shown that people regulate their own salt intake quite strictly, and that the amount of salt consumed per person around the world varies little.
There is no way that government can better regulate the amount of salt we eat than our own bodies do, quite naturally.
who knows? But, price could go up, and also, salt is a requirement to live.....I just like to be prepared.
What I would like to see is that panel of experts do the 1500mg limit starting June 1st...and see how many wind up in the hospital by September 1st because of hyponatremia
Nanny State PING!
Back in '08 the UK health officials there started cutting the amount of holes in salt shakers.
Silly Rabbits
They’ll pry my salty buttery popcorn from my cold dead fingers.
SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP!
Leave me the hell alone!
Damn these A$$holes just don’t quit with trying to tell me how to live my life.
I’ll eat a whole damn box of salt if I want to.
Sheesh, what kind of pansy assed country have we turned into when we permit the “advice” and “opinions” of unelected hacks trying to tell us how to live our lives to become newsfeed?
Answer: A neutered one addicted to American Idol like it’s crack.
We may eat too much salt, but regardless of the validity or lack thereof of the recommendation, where in the Constitution does the federal government derive authority to even make recommendations about people’s dietary practices?
I do admire the recent (about 25 years) addition of the "harmful to women, children and African Americans." Tragically, they will suffer most from NaCl poisoning.
Next year, when this article is re-run for the 400 millionth time, I suspect that NaCl poisoning will strike at the very vitals of America's Gay and Lesbian population. (NB, although Lesbians are "Gay," they always get their own slot).
The year after that, NaCl poisoning will cut down the transgendered population in its prime. I hope to be off the planet by the time NaCl poisoning is identified as the cause of Autism, or even worse, minority underachievement in public schools.
Can you live on that?
I will never eat corn on the cob without salt no matter what they say,and I have high blood preassure.
I don’t think there are any legitimate doctors or research institutions that would recommend that people restrict salt to 1/2 teaspoon a day. I think I was on that when I was on the Quick Weight Loss Plan, but that ain’t very much salt.
Here’s how that seems to work for me. I LOVE to eat sunflower seeds and much on them daily in the car. Salty? Yes, and they taste great. But if I’ve had too much salt or am dehydrated, they suddenly start to taste TOO salty, WAY too salty. It’s a signal to me that I need to dilute my internal concentration, and so I do.
Thanks for the ping!
Bravo.
If ashtrays were removed for health, about time we got those damn salt shakers out too.
If this saves the life of just one child, it’ll be worth it.

**Can you live on that?**
Actually, NO ... Salt is one of the main components of stomach acid. Less stomach acid makes digestion less, and will cause for less absorption of vital nutrients from foods eaten. Without salt, you can have MALNUTRITION, even if “well fed”.
I quit using salt after I had a minor stroke. When I use it at all, I use sea salt, but it’s MY choice, NOT the government telling me what I have to do.
