JERUSALEM Israel's leaders anxiously watched events in Egypt on Sunday as analysts warned that if a new leadership was dominated by Islamists it could threaten 30 years of peace between the two neighbours.
As the wave of unprecedented protests continued to engulf Egypt, Israeli officials have been nervously eyeing developments and assessing the likely impact on ties.
"We are attentively following what is going on in Egypt and in our region," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday after holding late-night talks with US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
"Peace between Israel and Egypt has existed for more than three decades and our aim is to ensure that these relations continue to exist," he said.
Israel's two top-selling dailies ran the same banner headline on their front pages on Sunday, proclaiming "A New Middle East" and raising the spectre of Islamic fundamentalists filling the political vacuum left by the expected end of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's autocratic rule.
"In this kind of chaotic situation, the advantage of groups like the Muslim Brotherhood is that they are the most organised and also the most resolute," said Benjamin Miller, a Haifa University expert on Middle East conflicts and security.
Even though Muslim Brotherhood activists had not so far been prominent in the demonstrations, the group had the advantage of having a widespread political infrastructure already in place, he said.
Israel, which is already facing hostile Islamic groups in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, is deeply concerned at the prospect of Islamic gains in Egypt, with which it shares its longest border.
But aware of the hypersensitivity of Israel's relations with the Arab world, Netanyahu ordered his cabinet ministers to make no public statements on the issue, a move which Miller said was wise.

That’s just an absurd notion....according to the White House and a lot of Freepers here, the Egyptians just want democracy and peace. What are the Israelis thinking? /s
Maybe its me...but I kinda had a clue this type of activity was on its way as soon as this country elected a man named Hussein.
I don't blame them. The first post-Mubarak government might be moderate but they will eventually be overthrown by a radical religious faction. Then the stuff will really hit the fan.
I fear we’re going to see one of two things. The mass destruction of the Jewish people. Or the return of the Lord to prevent that from happening. I don’t have any faith that our government will do anything to prevent it.
Obama, the Secretive.
Now you know why. He is NOT a US citizen and he IS a RADICAL MUSLIM.
The Left and Islam have a lot of common. FASCISM.

It’s going to happen!
“Now you know why. He is NOT a US citizen and he IS a RADICAL MUSLIM.”
Nahh.. His father was. Bambi is a Marxist.
The Egyptian Military has changed cosniderably since 1973. If I were Israel, I would not let myself get caught with my pants down again and I would start stockpiling ammo now as it seems that you probably won’t be able to count on Barack Obama for an emergency resupply.
To establish legitimacy we the Egyption people, the first thing a new government must do is cut ties with Israel and open the Gaza border. Economics is second to hate . . . err, religion.
obama’s goal:
1. Destroy America
2. Support muslims running other countries. Especially radical muslims.
If the majority of dispensational bible prophecy scholars are correct, either now or at some time in the near future Egypt will return to it's former status as one of the most virulently anti-Israel Islamic nations along with Iran, Syria, etc. They believe that's predicted in Old Testament prophecy written long before some of those nations even existed. Egypt, Syria, Sudan, Persia(Iran), Turkey, Lebanon, and another 2 or 3 Islamic nations I don't remember offhand are specifically mentioned in Bible prophecy as nations that will join Russia (Gog) in an invasion of Israel in the final days before the return of Christ. According to that interpretation (if I understand it correctly), Israel will be near defeat when God Himself will intervene and the invading armies will be crushed and driven back into their own lands.
Most dispensational Protestant bible scholars say there is no mention of the US in bible prophecy. If not, it must be that either we will not be a nation at the time that invasion takes place, or more likely just not a major military or financial power on the world scene by that time.
OTOH, Covenant theology theologians don't believe that present day Israelis are descendants of biblical Jews, or that today's Israel is the same Israel of the Old Testament. If they're right today's Israel is not under God's protection, and would probably be a sitting duck for an alliance of Russia and it's Islamic allies unless the US intervened militarily. It's beginning to look like one or the other of the two scenarios will unfold before our eyes in the near future.
Personally, I hope the dispensational interpretation is correct, I would like to see Israel wipe out the Iranian Mullahs and their fanatical murderers once and for all. And of course the return of Christ would be by far the best of all possible outcomes for all believing Christians.
If Covenant Theology is correct and Israel is not under God’s protection then we may very well see a nuclear war. I can see Israel releasing everything they’ve got. They’re not going to sit by and allow themselves to be taken captive. They’ll go out with a bang.
So, no matter which theology is correct, we’re in for one heck of a fireworks show! And possible very soon!
I think Obama will try his best to prevent the return of the Lord.
He just might.
But if he does, his "Yes We Can" signs ain't gonna get the job done.
Read Isaiah 19. It’s rather interesting.
Preventing the return of the Lord would be obama’s job, I guess.
