Bedouin tribesman have reportedly taken control of two towns in the Sinai Peninsula. These two towns are the closest to the Gaza Strip and right next to the border with Israel. There were reports yesterday that Bedouin tribes had besieged a police station in Suez and it appears that these riots have spread. This would effectively end the Mubarak dictatorships control of the region. There are no reports of the Egyptian military stepping in here.
The more disturbing news is a threat that has been made by the tribes if Mubarak does not step down. According to one report coming from Time Magazine, they are willing to attack the Suez Canal if Mubarak does not leave. The Suez Canal currently is where a third of the worlds oil and six percent of all products passes through. A seizure of the Canal could spike oil prices beyond the current $90 level, perhaps over $110. This could come to pass despite the fact that Egypt is not a major oil producer.
It has been speculated that the Egyptian army would not allow the Canal, perhaps Egypts most important economic element, to be attacked. However, there appears to be little to no protection and one report states that at least one ship has been attacked there. Others have reported fear of passing through due to the unrest.

With our CIC on whose side?
I don’t think we have a side in this.
“I will stand with them [the muslims] should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”

Only a couple percent of the world’s oil supply flows through the Suez as opposed to the Strait of Hormuz where roughly 20# of the world’s total supply passes. Still, any disruption probably would send oil past that $110 region noted.
From the sound of things Mubarak is toast. Probably the quicker he steps down the better as hanging on only creates more instability and chaos which opens the door wider for the hard core Islamists to slip in.
Limp wristed Obama telling Mubarak to be bold. Love to hear how that was received!
Damn! They’ve got Obi Wan! We’re so hosed....
Was chatting about the Suez Canal security situation.
Here’s what we came up with,
Steal 5 full size dumptrucks and one front loader. Fill the dumptrucks up with 15 tons of boulders. Drive the 5 dumptrucks to one of the maintenance access ramps then along the levee, and drive them all into the canal at the same location.
The canal would be shut down for unknown amount of time as the Army sources winches and transportation for the winches to the locations of approximately 95 tons of boulders and heavy dumptrucks in the canal.
Would take less than a night to fill the trucks if they had access to a quarry... there are abandoned quarries that are decades and millenniums old along the canal zone.
Could be done with as little as 6 men, with one knowing how to use a front loader and then driving the getaway vehicle, and 5 knowing how to drive a commercial dumptruck.
Perhaps the last watchable movie made by the Hollywood studio system.
“I know - let’s just take Aqaba!”
I will stand with them [the muslims] should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.
So when it’s muzzies agin muzzies he’s free to just sit on his ass and do nothing.
I think he's too busy... Superbowl coming up, campaign trips, basketball, vacations planned... there's only so much we can expect from the man.
Wow. I knew it was a lot, but I had no idea it was that much. Even if you just delay 1/3 of the world's oil supply, it would had dramatic, perhaps catastrophic economic impact.
Of course, I'm sure Obama has thought all this through. Chris Matthews assures me he's very smart.
It was definatly a good movie - To bad Lawrence was a lib
Plus, Spartacus is back on Starz. Obama loves him some oiled, rippling-muscle men rolling around in sand and whatnot. He's artsy that way. Subsequently, we know his Fridays for the next 3-months are booked solid.
Don't be absurd. Of course he's not sitting around doing NOTHING. Why just this afternoon he was at his daughter Sasha's basketball game. (I am NOT making it up)
Oil will spike, no matter what happens, but the alternative is the horn of Africa. Costly, but not prohibitive.
Or to support the strictest side.
Reminds me of that pic where barry is hiding behind mooshelle during that wrestling match.
