Sen. Jim DeMint reportedly open to run for president in 2012

South Carolina U.S. Senator Jim DeMint is reportedly considering a run for president in 2012.

The South Carolina Republican, who ruled out the possibility of a run, is said to be reconsidering his decision in light of Rep. Mike Pence’s official withdrawal from the race.

Additionally, news that Mr. DeMint will travel to Iowa on March 26 to address a conservative forum organized by Rep. Steve King is adding fuel to the fire over the possibility of a DeMint presidential run.

Mr. DeMint, who raised his national profile during the 2010 mid-term election, continues to build his base amongst those in the Tea Party movement and in the conservative wing of the Republican Party.

A DeMint presidential run would likely complicate plans for former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, both of whom are considered the front-runners of the 2012 Republican Party presidential primary (neither have officially announced their candidacy).

Those most likely to be directly impacted by a DeMint run include former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, who would compete with DeMint for supporters and financing.

DeMint and Palin would split the conservative/Tea Party vote. One of them has to say no or we need to get ready for another Dole/McCain candidate, probably a former Governor of Massachusetts or worse.

I don’t care for the idea of another Senator running (we get 2 dozen every cycle), but considering the lot so far, he is miles above most of them.

I shudder at the though of Romney, of JBush, of Gingrich, of Huckabee getting the nomination, just like I did last time when McCain was the chosen one.

“DeMint is my number one choice. By far.”

Me too. We need a good conservative leader. Palin falls into #5 or 6 in my projections. We need a god send, and he may be it.

My hope is Jeb will run in ‘16. He’s one of the best governors Fl(or the US) has ever had. He just has a bad last name.

[ As a corollary to that: GOP primary voters may be too stupid to select a conservative for their candidate. ]

Corollary to THAT: democrats learned something in the latest Alaskan Senate election..
If your candidate can't win then have democrats write in the RINO running against the republican..
Moosecowski won by those means.. its diabolical.. but brilliant..

Will probably be cloned future elections..

Mixed signals coming from the DeMint camp but I think he’s got a very good chance of running. He’d be a strong conservative voice.

Some various indications that he’s not out and still has the option open to a run:

An aide to Sen. Jim DeMint (R., S.C.) tells CNN’s Peter Hamby he’s open to a presidential run if none of the other contenders proves sufficiently popular - or conservative - enough. DeMint will address a forum hosted by Rep. Steve King (R., Iowa) in the Hawkeye State on March 26, though advisor Matt Hoskins insists in an e-mail, “Senator DeMint has absolutely no plans to run for president.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theticket/20110127/pl_yblog_theticket/jim-demint-says-he-wont-run-for-president-but-his-advisers-beg-to-differ

“He hasn’t completely shut the door on running,” the aide says. “If there is a massive void in the group of candidates, who knows what could happen?

Still, DeMint’s advisers put his chances of running at about 5 percent—or, as they might put it, not quite a “no.”

********

With some luck I hope he gets in. I know not all candidates have to be declared anytime soon but I’d like to see him show up for the first debate for the potential contenders;

BUMP.

I called his office and talked to the gal who answers his phone. (a sweet intern from Bob Jones U, no less). She said that yes, messages are actually given to the Senator, and yes, he’s been getting lots of urging to run.

I’m not worried about the conservative vote being split after the first couple of primaries. My three favorites are all in the race now, I think its plain. Bachmann, Palin, and DeMint have led the fight against Obama right from the start, Bachmann from the congress, DeMint from the senate and Palin from outside government. They are all three constitutionalists, and all three fighters.

They have been allies thus far; unlike the Romniacs they haven’t wasted any energy sniping at one another, rather they have supported one another. Which speaks well for them again, they are adults who have put the country ahead of their ambitions.

Once the race heats up, and they stand up side by side to present their vision I think it will become obvious who is the one who should lead, and I’m going to predict is that the other two will support the other.

DeMint is the heavier hitter. Palin has the ability to communicate to the crowds. Bachmann is solid. All three are fearless. This is going to be a good campaign season because they will dominate the discussion and force everyone else to respond to their arguments. They will set the terms of the debate.

Do you think Palin would run should DeMint become a candidate? She’s indicated in the past she’d not be in the race if another entered that was met her qualifications. I guess the question begs, “does DeMint meet her qualifications to run so that she didn’t feel the need to run”? If so then they’d not split the vote.

If nothing else, 2012 Republican dabates for President are going to be wild. I can't wait!!!! We are the only party that will have a primary season. I think that Obama will run OR he will step aside for Hillary without another nominee. The Republicans will have 12 candidates at least and will be a hard fought primary season.

So his aides don’t respect his decision. Sound like just the man to replace Obama.

You know my reasons for opposing Palin, so I’m not going to repeat them here. Suffice to say that indeed they are allies and If your scenario plays out, and the establishment guys are defeated, that would be a good thing. One potential problem is that some others like Perry, Santorum, and Barbour, who are viewed as real “conservatives” the media and by most non-freeping primary voters could scramble the conservative vote. This is not going to be an easy task to defeat the Huck/Romney/Tpaw/Newt wing of the party.

Do you think Palin would run should DeMint become a candidate?

The question of the day for sure. Palin has said she would not run if there was a viable conservative candidate out there who could win. I think DeMint is that candidate but will Palin agree. I don't know.

Thank you so much. I put it on my calendar so I am ready with popcorn. Seriously I do eat popcorn while watching tv but not because of hopeful drama but because I enjoy it.
