The BBC is reporting that Egyptian Army tanks have allegedly surrounded the embassies of the United States and United Kingdom. This comes after Israel evacuated its entire embassy staff via helicopter. This is coming in through their live blog, and further details appear scarce. The BBC is quoting an al-Jazeera cable:
2125: Tanks have surrounded the US and British embassies in Cairo, Al-Jazeera reports.
This could be a huge, huge problem. This is similar to 1979 when the Islamic rebels took the US Embassy and held hostages for 444 days.
Have not seen one tank deployed on the streets of Cairo..they are armored personnel carriers.

The point is America will be center staged, like it or not. Tanks, APCs, etc will all target Uncle Sam. Reflections of Jimmy Carter are apropo. Time to start burning embasst documents and destroying hard drives?

That’s what I was thinking, as well. I notice Israel evacuated its entire embassy staff, which was a smart move under the circumstances. We may have to do the same shortly.

From what I heard, they’re used to seeing the brutal riot police come in and smash heads during events like these .
So I imagine the Army is seen as more restrained.[?]
Looks like 3 out of 4 of the pedestrians in the image, have captured or are in the process of capturing, images of the tracked vehicle. Apparently they are not seen as threatening to the operators of said vehicle. Interesting situation.
Hope they're prepared to skuttle if necessary.
