David Gergen not surprisingly believes that increased federal spending on education - or "investments" as Democrats like to say - is essential irrespective of our nation's current fiscal crisis.
On "Anderson Cooper 360" following the President's State of the Union address, former Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer did his darnedest to explain to the CNN senior political analyst that our mammoth budget deficits should first be brought under control before any additional outlays are considered (video follows with transcript and commentary):
DAVID GERGEN, CNN SENIOR POLITICAL ANALYST: I agree but let me ask Ari this question, Anderson. Because Republicans have sort of said basically we don't like all this investment to become better -- more competitive and everything. It sounds just like more spending.
But Ari, didn't George W. Bush embrace this whole report on being more competitive that came out of the National Academies of Science and Engineering and put it forward and got it approved on Capitol Hill? Aren't -- aren't people in the Republican Party fundamentally for this?

arent we already spending ungodly amounts of money PER STUDENT?
I would love to see the figures of money spent NOT ON TEACHERS (admin, paperwork, supplies, etc etc)
How many people in the school system make over $100K per year
I WANT NAMES!!!
I am going out to invest in a case of beer.
Maybe these new “investments” are the people’s investment portfolios- 401K, pensions. 0bama has promised to be fiscally responsible so instead of borrowing more money, he will simply confiscate our investments (unless you are a union member of course) through “nationalization” so he can redistribute the money to GE and other crony enterprises. The positive feedback continues as 0bama receives campaign cash from the crony companies and countries like China.
What is he talking about?
If our schools are failing to teach math and science adequately, what does that have to do with money?
It appears that many math and science teachers need to be fired, and more competent ones hired.
A case of Advil would help. too.
Get two - it’ll save gas when the first one is gone.
Was Larry Sabato there too?
BTW - Gergen was NEVER a conservative. He was one of the Bushie “mice” who kept undermining the Reagan administration
good question
If one math teacher cannot teach a child will TWO help him?
or just one more competant one?
Beezlebubba was right.
Throwing tons of more federal money at schools won't help.
I would love to dismantle the Dept. of Education...but the Blood Libel Media would only use that move to demonize the GOP.
Gergen got Brown elected in Massachusetts with his “Kennedy’s seat” question...basically using the same line of reasoning and questions...”do you really want to kill women and children in order to save money???
Gergen always reminded me of one of those talking thumbs
Gergen is the 8 ball in the progressive pocket pool crowd.
