Actor Alec Baldwin has joined a list of elite New Yorkers targeted by tax collectors who think they're fibbing about where they really live to dodge New York City income taxes.
In recent years, auditors have confronted hundreds of super-wealthy New Yorkers over the residency rules - including star Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter.
Facing shrinking revenues, the state has ramped up its pursuit of suspected tax dodgers, hiring 189 new auditors and - for the first time - making filers swear under oath on tax forms as to how many days they "spend in New York City."
If it's more than 183 days and the filer has a residence in the city, the tax bill goes up

Local income taxes ought to be illegal, and any city that has them should have be sued into oblivion.
Good luck alligator entree's.
Actual title:
City takes aim at rich, famous like Alec Baldwin, Derek Jeter, who may be fibbing on where they live
I knew a real title wouldn’t end with a comma.
I agree with NY. If you spend all your time there, then pay NY taxes. If you want to pay less, then move out.
I disagree.
They should be allowed to tax themselves into oblivion.
Let their self-evisceration be an object lesson for the rest of us.
You go NY! You go girl!!! Get them tax cheats. Nail their tails and put them in jail. How DARE they avoid your taxes!
(No wonder Rush left. I’m amazed Hannity and others remain.)
Oh, the mirror is an ugly place. Good luck chasing away the last of your taxpayers you morons.
Such a wonderfull target, yet such a stupid policy. Yes, drive them all out.
Celebrities including Hollywoodites and rap stars and members of Congress especially senators, as well as members of the network media, should all be investigated for income tax evasion.
Past gubernatorial candidate Thomas Golisano stated that it cost him $13,000 per day to live in New York State. He moved out.
He founded Paychex, a payroll company.
How now, I’m no friend of Arrec Barrwin but I must say NYC may have to hire more than the aforementioned 189 auditors to track those high-earners’ movements.
I like the part about the magnate whose executive assistant furnished detailed notes proving that he spent only 182 days in the Big Apple rather than the required 184.
I’m glad to read that Arrec Barrwin keeps another house so he can spend time with his daughter. Hey, I’d like to see him impaled Vlad-style as much as the next conservative but I know from grim experience that that shrieking phone call didn’t mean that much in the proper context of a messy divorce.
All income taxes should be illegal, but I'd rather have local income taxes than state or federal ones.
Taxes should be collected locally and spent locally whenever possible.
New York is ridiculously expensive.
You practically have to be a gazillionaire to live there.
And yet they keep raising taxes and fees which is driving most reasonable people out of the city and state.
California and Illinois are doing the same thing so it won’t be long before many cities in those states are ghost towns.
What a great basis for a revenue raising idea. If NY lowered that number, perhaps to 20 to 30 days, visitors would have to pay more to visit the city/state! That might mean nobody in NY would have to pay any taxes! Let those coming to NY for business or pleasure pay the taxes required.
The paradox here though is that it's events like this that gives liberals an epiphany. Unfortunately they need to become a target of big runaway government before they see the light. They never see it coming, yet it's so predictable to the rest of us.
Good luck you new money morons of the coasts. Don't think this is going to be an isolated geographic phenomenon. They'll be tracking your cell phone and handing out tax bills around the country based on how many nights you hang your hat anywhere.
That would've been sweet, given that us Canuckleheads elected a Conservative government in '06 :-p
Liberal means never having to say you're a liar.
Ha! I usually watch for things like that, but didn't think of this. Good catch, blackdog!
(Ummm... you wouldn't be a retriever, would you? *\;^)
