Washington (CNN) -- Will Tuesday be "Date Night" in Congress for President Barack Obama's State of the Union address?

Democratic and Republican legislators are pairing off to sit together for the annual speech in a symbolic gesture of bipartisanship, and some of the combinations so far are intriguing.

Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, the epitome of East Coast liberalism, and Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, a symbol of conservative intransigence, are putting aside their differences to cross the political aisle for a night, Schumer said Sunday.

"I think if Coburn and Schumer can sit next to each other, then probably just about everybody can," Schumer told the CBS program "Face the Nation," adding: "It's true it's symbolic, but let's not forget (that) oftentimes in history, symbols influence reality."

That's so sweet.

Maybe they should get married.

I get the impression the Republicans are playing for the same team as the Democrats. I wonder who is the head coach of the whole team?

“Hugging” Democrats won’t make Republicans any less than what they are. The Republicans ought to take this and run with it...Democrats need more love because public isn’t buying their stories. There should be a program where everyone offers a Democrat a big hug as they enter the House and let know that they could fix their problems if they would just adapt.

"The proper protocol would be for Republicans to laugh, point at Obonghit, and mock him at every pause."

Kinda like channeling your inner Alinsky? I love it!

Gotta give the Dems a little credit for pulling a fast one on Republicans with this seating deal. But then again that’s not that hard to do when your opponents are naive and gullible.

I’d just tell the rat’s to vote their way and I will vote based on the constitution & what’s good for country! Period. Other than that just ignore the rats! Sick of this crap.

1. [noun] the trait of being intransigent; stubbornly refusing to compromise.

So "epitome of East Coast liberalism" vs. "conservative intransigence." A story about supposed bipartisanship by a partisan "reporter" doing their standard hacking job vs. a Pubbie, no matter how slight.

I’d like to nominate Coburn to sit between Sheila Jackson Lee and Maxine Waters for the evening and then get back to us about “getting along”

21 days. What an embarrassment.

If they would take a moment to look at ‘we the people’ - they’d see we aren’t laughing.

Foolish republicans suckered into sitting with democrats are going to spend the evening sitting there looking up at their democrat pal’s BUTTS.

The democrats will be up and down, standing and applauding Obama’s every word.
While the republicans just sit there democrats will be rubbing their backsides in the republicans faces.

Any republican who plays touchy-feely with the democrats and falls for this alternate sitting arrangement deserves what they will get - a face full of democrats’ BUTTS!
