BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley told a church crowd just moments into his new administration that those who have not accepted Jesus as their savior are not his brothers and sisters, shocking some critics who questioned Tuesday whether he can be fair to non-Christians.
"Anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother," Bentley said Monday, his inauguration day, according to The Birmingham News.
The Anti-Defamation League on Tuesday called Bentley's remarks shocking.
"His comments are not only offensive, but also raise serious questions as to whether non-Christians can expect to receive equal treatment during his tenure as governor," said Bill Nigut, the ADL's regional director.

Whenever I doubt that conservatives can give more fodder to their opponents along comes one to fill the void.

This is taken out of context. It’s no big deal. Maybe he should be in the closet with an intern on his spare time instead of being in church.

Wow! That is something else.
To: americanophile
Even though what he says is certainly Bible based and true. As an elected official he should know better than to say it.
He needs to decide. Does he want to be a governor or a pastor.

It’s ALWAYS taken out of context, but the more we give them, the more they have to work with. We’ll hear about this forever now - about what intolerant Bible thumpers the Republicans are. This is the “see! see!” kind of moment that they and the media live for. The stupid party.

Oddly enough, the keyword search ‘Robert Bentley’ returned nothing. Not my problem.

He has a right to his religious viewpoints.
There is a brotherhood among believers that unbelievers don’t share, naturally.
Perhaps it was not PC to acknowledge this fact. So what.
How much spiritual brotherhood would a Jewish governor feel with Muslims? How much spiritual brotherhood would an atheist governor feel with the Amish?
To rejoice in the spiritual brotherhood you have among people of like faith is not controversial unless someone tries to make it so.

The “universal brotherhood of man” is a fundamental principle of freemasonry. It is a concept incompatible with Christianity. The fact that it has become a mandatory piety of our American civic religion speaks volumes.

I had put this comment on another thread, earlier:
Since this relationship requires a kind of affirmation of such a faith, where do infants, foetuses and the mentally challenged stand? Are they not brothers because they cannot affirm confidence in the said faith?
So many questions, so many thoughts!
To: Romulus
But rather than delve into the waters of ‘civic religion,’ why doesn't this man just focus on the job he was elected to do and leave the proselytizing to those more appropriately positioned to affect souls?

Jesus said it first:
“For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother. —Matthew 12:50
To: americanophile
He was trying to connect with those in the church. He is correct. If they, like him, have been adopted into the family of God, that makes them Brothers and Sisters. Not a big deal, just a statement of fact.
No more controversial than saying you know what? We have the same mother so we are brothers/sisters. Just the facts.

Amen to that. Sounds like a straight-shooter. You all living in Alabama must be pretty proud of your new guv. That is, you all that know the Lord as your Saviour. All else are “condemned already” (John 3:18).

That “will” would include accepting Jesus Christ as Saviour.
