A leading civil rights leader in Congress believes the Democratic Party is losing too many white voters.
In an interview, Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) said Democrats need to "go all out" to win back white Southern voters before the next election.
White voters preferred Republican candidates by almost two-to-one in the midterms last year. Their support helped the GOP win 22 seats in the states that make up the Old Confederacy. The Democrats' only pickup in the region was the New Orleans district where the party holds a registration advantage.
Since November, there have been a string of defections by Southern Democratic state lawmakers, which has prompted renewed speculation about the party’s future in the region. Former Alabama Rep. Artur Davis (D) said Democrats should even consider running as Independents if they want to succeed.
Lewis, who was a civil rights activist before being elected to Congress in 1986, said he's concerned the party is losing its diversity, which will make it difficult to reclaim the lost seats.
"We've got to go all out and get white voters, especially white men, to come back to the Democratic Party," he told The Ballot Box. "I just think it's important for the Democratic Party to roll out and try to reveal itself and not become a party that is split along racial lines."

The GOP needs to adopt the Sailer strategy - if it can consistently get 70% of the white vote, the Democrats are finished as a national party.
Great news for Tea Party and Republicans..... The Dems are hemorrhaging white guys. Too much AA bullcrap in a lousy economy. White dudes become mad when they lose out to the AA guys. Immigration will only give us more affirmative action. Every formerly illegal Hispanic alien now becomes an affirmative action competitor for jobs and his kid gets school and university preferences

John Lewis? Isn't this the guy who claimed he was called the "n" word by Tea Party demonstrators in DC? Yea, that will really help Mr. Lewis (more sarcasm).
When you have a major political party like the dems catering to gays, terrorists, atheists, anti military/anti American groups, anti business, anti free market, anti entrepreneurship, anti capitalism, foreign communist dictatorships then is it any wonder why the dems are losing such a large portion of their followers. It is not hard to understand.

Even some Democrats have to be getting tired of the race card getting played all the time.
The democrats have made it clear that if you don’t fit into one of their special interest groups, you don’t count. And if you are a white male, not only do you not count, but you are to be derided and mocked (just look at television commercials put out by liberal la-la land).
Seems that this has hit home to a lot of “buy the world a Coke and teach the world to sing” types over the past two years.
“Hey you bitter, racist, Bible-clinging, right-wing crackers! Come join the Democrat Party!”
Your impression was sccurate. White guys were the sacrifice. After all, they have to demonize one group to get the vote of another.
Once you do that, you have lost them for good.
Last year 2010 almost everything Obama did alienated white males primarily to play with his liberal base in the house and liberal voters, and to some degree mark some liberal accomplishments off his personal list.
This year you will see a different Obama playing to 2012 white voters much like he did in 2008 to get re-elected. How well it works remains to be seen, and how well Republicans can get him out on a limb, to keep him owning everything bad.
The Democratic platform of higher taxes, statist meddling, federal dominance, and wealth redistribution is antithetical to traditional Southern vaules of independence, self-determination, and strong communities. If the GOP was smart — which they’ve never been accused of — they’d spread the word that those values are not only welcome, but are cherished in its ranks.
After decades of arrogant condescension toward the peasants in flyover country, it is inevitable that folks in the Midwest and South flee from the Democrats in droves. Call it “Revenge of the Rubes.”

That's the big fracture line in Dem constituencies: white males versus affirmative action candidates.
In the Republican party, the fracture line is between those who are primarily fiscal conservatives versus those who are primarily social conservatives.
Go figure.
