[Movie] Attendance Crumbles in 2010
Box Office Mojo ^ | 1/11/2011 | Brandon Gray

2010 closed as the second highest-grossing year of all time, but it still couldn't shake an air of disappointment. Not only did 2010 end with a whimper, estimated ATTENDANCE was the LOWEST in 15 years.

The box office tally for 2010 was $10.57 billion, or around $30 million shy of 2009. That translated to an estimated attendance of 1.27 billion, which was off eight percent from 2010.

1995 was the last year to have sub-1.3 billion attendance. Since the modern attendance peak in 2002 (1.58 billion), attendance has been trending downward, but 2010 marked the second severe drop-off, following 2005.

Hollywood often failed to offer an appealing slate of movies, and there were fewer movies made available than before. In 2010, 141 movies reached nationwide release (600 locations or more), down from 158 in 2009 and the smallest number since 2001.

The top-grossing movie of 2010 was a holdover from 2009: Avatar, which made $476.9 million of its $760.5 million lifetime total in 2010.

Toy Story 3 was the second-biggest movie in 2010, drawing $415 million. Alice in Wonderland ($334.2 million), Iron Man 2 ($312.4 million) and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ($300.5 million) rounded out the Top Five.

Animation business was up 16 percent over 2009 to $1.49 billion, while movies presented in the 3D illusion surged to $3.27 billion (an estimated $2.1 billion of which from 3D alone).

All of the major animated titles of 2010 were shown in 3D, and the industry shoved 3D down people's throats in the wake of Avatar's success, adding enough screens to the point in December when several movies had simultaneous nationwide 3D runs.

All those 3D movies contributed to the gross, but they boiled down to more money from fewer people.

Do not see "Green Hornet" under any circumstances.

Why?

Hollywood often failed to offer an appealing slate of movies, and there were fewer movies made available than before.

Neither of those is the big factor, IMO. My wife and I used to go to a lot of movies. Now that they cost ~$10 a head (even without 3-D), we just don't. I can buy the DVD for less than that. We haven't been to the theater in probably over two years.

I used to work for a theater like that... we were showing second-run films from Hollywood and first-run films from Bollywood. I worked box office part time for nine years and had a blast. Unfortunately, the manager died, and the owners were so heart-broken they sold the place, which subsequently went under.

I like the tux idea.

I hate most of the junk Hollywood puts out. The last movie we saw in a theater was “R.E.D.”, and that was so we could see Dame Helen Mirren with a .50 cal machine gun. If we want to see movies, we'll go to the library.

Hollyweird is crumbling some more because movie attendance is dropping like a rock down a deep hole ping.

Really, really bad. The acting, the plot, the premise, the music, the casting, everything. Worst movie I have seen in a long time.

I think movie theater owners are in for more tough going. With rentals/dvds coming out just a couple of months after the movie is in the theaters, lots of people just wait until then to see new movies.

So, what can movie theaters do? Their draw has to be the ‘movie theater experience.’ And unfortunately, they’re screwed there too. Obnoxious people in the audience just ruin ‘the experience’. 3-D is an attempt to enhance ‘the experience’. But to pay extra for the 3-D and still deal with rude/inconsiderate audience still doesn’t solve the problem. And is 3-D here to stay? There’s no ‘after market’ yet so how long will it last?

Ridiculously high concession prices doesn’t help matters either - although I understand that’s where they make their money. It’s another negative to overcome. So a family of four to go to the movies and get popcorn etc. is going to shell out close to $100 for entertainment.

And the movies themselves are awful. Loud. Vulgar language. Lousy writing. Terrible plot. Horrible theme. Usually negative attitude toward traditional values. Usually negative attitude towards our country.
It’s gotten so bad that I always notice if the F-bomb isn’t strewn throughout the dialog.

Staying home becomes more appealing every day.
I think there is going to be major ‘consolidation’ in the movie theater industry in the next few years.

"So, the mass interest isn’t there."

Good artists like good politicians should be representative or at least able to communicate with the majority of their audience/constituency. The major motion picture studios not only don’t represent the larger demographic block of this country they despise us. Like our government, they have for the most part, lost touch with the very people they wish to serve.

We went one time in 2010 and we both picked up a stomach virus from the nasty theater seats. Mr Ditter ended up in the hospital for almost a week. We have been once already this year, saw True Grit. eh?......... couldn't hear or understand the stilted speech they used.... ok.... not great..... fair. Hollyweird is going to have to make it without us.

I recently made the mistake of renting “Eat Pray Love” starring Julia Roberts.

I was completely distracted from what little plot there was by JR’s non “Pretty Woman” status. The lady is just plain homely.

No amount of million dollar holly wood makeup or collagen lip pumps can hide the fact.

The upper lip collagen injection for the pouty look appears more like she took a left hook.

FWIW, I seldom go to the movies, not so much for the content, but because of the experience.

Unruly, untended little kids

Talkative ‘adults’

Flicker and glow of smart phones

Audience members who insist on participating in the dialog

NET: behaviour by others in the theatre that I did NOT pay to have to tolerate.

Our home theatre investment of 13 years ago has long paid for itself. (even with having to buy new bulbs, and one new amp)

We saw that movie RED at the ROXY a few weeks ago! It was a fun movie.

The owner of the Roxy just had the wood floors redone and bought new seats with cupholders. We're going there next week to see Denzel Washington & Chris Pine in "UNSTOPPABLE."

I don't know if it's good, but we like going to the Roxy and supporting it.

Gee whiz. I wonder why? It couldn't be because 90% of what Hollyweird pushes now is anti-American, pc, homo infested leftist tripe filth. Now could it?

A couple nights ago I watched a movie made in 2010, it was called, 'Meet The 300'. It was supposed to be a parody of the '300'. Well, it was the most UN-FUNNY (cough) 'parody' I've ever seen.

In short it portrayed the Spartans as a bunch of limp wristed Homos. Every couple minutes there was some Homo reference. And instead of walking they 'pranced' like girly-men wherever they went. But it also portrayed the adult Spartan men as a bunch of 'Butch' child abusers who beat-up their sons for the pure joy of it.

That 'movie' was plain SICK.

Yes, Spartan life was tough and cruel. They were a Warrior Culture trained to Kill.
But back in 480 BC life for anyone wasn't exactly a bowl of cherries.

The King’s Speech-Best movie of the year.

We're going to see it today. Too bad it's rated R. Grade school kids could learn about history.

I read the book and enjoyed it for the travel aspect. It was hard to get past her narcissism but I did enough to enjoy the book. The movie was a whole different story. I could not get past how fat Julia Roberts was and WHY they felt the need cast her in the role especially at her cost. I pictured Ann Heche in that role. I have no love for her either but it was how I pictured the main character.
