THE announcement that Representatives Heath Shuler of North Carolina and Jason Chaffetz of Utah are planning to wear guns in their home districts has surprised many, but in fact the United States has had armed congressmen before. In the rough-and-tumble Congress of the 1830s, 1840s and 1850s, politicians regularly wore weapons on the House and Senate floors, and sometimes used them.

Ah, the good old days ...
Good thing it wasn't in the days of Barney Frank.
I always thought they should bring dueling back. Would clean things up a lot.
If congressmen start carrying weapons at public events to protect themselves from us, then shouldn’t we have the right to carry our own weapons at these same events to protect ourselves from them?
Personally I think it should become a mandatory law, all Congressmen/women should be armed or have a qualified bodyguard 24/7.
Funny, I take the opposite point of view, I don’t believe Any Duly Elected Public Servant or Public Employee should receive any more security or right of self defense than the average person, ever. We used to call this Equal Protection under the Law.
"That changed with the arrival of the telegraph. Congressmen suddenly had to confront the threat or temptation of 'instant' nationwide publicity."
The threat--and temptation--is far greater today in the Information Age!
And to confront the threat of TRUTH--"traveling with lightning speed...to the remotest borders of the Republic--Leftists/Democrats are desperate to silence all voices except their own!
As pro 2nd Amendment as I am, I would have to question the wisdom of arming a person who truly believes that the island of Guam is in danger of flipping over due to the increased presence of US military personnel.
I agree with you. Congresspersons should be subject to the same laws as all citizens. As Harry Truman said: "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."
Making them subject to the same laws as all other citizens would immeasurably increase the QUALITY of people SERVING in Congress.
For those persons they make a modified pistol....
Without posting an image needless to say the exit direction isn’t traditional.
So long as they recieve the necessary firearms combat police training and qualify at Quantico FBI. Then Practice for 4 hous a week every week under a snarling mean Marine DI and requalify on that weapon annually.
Otherwise they are more of a danger to themselves and the innocent public.
Maybe if they didn’t engage in so much oppression they would have less to fear.
I’m all for this, as long as said Congresscritter isn’t one of those who hypocritically packs heat while trying to grab our guns and make it much more difficult to obtain them.
You know, the Carl Rowan types who would deny us, but keep illegal guns in their own homes. (Yes, I know Rowan is not a politician...)
Not just Congress but all government workers. The feds, state and locals should all be just as limited as us. The deck is stacked against us and it must be changed or the republic will die.
I forgot the dumb asses name. Help me out?
By the way, I saw the clip - he was not "joking", he was dead serious.
Hank Johnson
It's your RIGHT.
Absolutly right! All government workers.
The only thing more outrageous and ridiculous than Congressmen’s exempting themselves from the laws they pass on other citizens is the toleration of such a ridiculous outrage by the citizenry itself!
