Poor Illinois. It's taken over the mantle as the state that everyone thinks is the most screwed.

Faced with a monster budget gap, the state Senate just passed a monster 66% hike in the state income tax.

The news has governors or other states gleeful.

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels said today that the tax hike was good for... Indiana

And during his State of the State address, New Jersey governor Chris Christie held up Illinois as a state that was going in the wrong direction.

Chicago readers, any plans to move?

How is this even possible? Yet it is true.

Re: "I would like to invite every citizen of Illinois to come to Texas, EXCEPT the Chicago bunch!"

Yeah, we have enough problems with those in Austin - we certainly don't need any more.

Wisconsin has a 8.75% upper income state income tax; even with the increase in IL it will still be much much lower than in tax hell Wisconsin.

Lots of people we know are moving to Indiana, we're looking at that possibility too, even if you work in Illinois, you still pay part of that tax, but real estate taxes on similar homes is so much lower, you come out ahead in the end.

Yes, look for a big exodus from Illinois, people & businesses! Idiot RATS, then they still won't have the revenue!

We would love to move to Texas, will be looking at the job market there very soon!!! I HATE ILLINOIS, when I was a kid, my dad’s company wanted to transfer him to Texas, but my mother said NO.

Another bonus for anyone in Illinois considering Wisconsin, we have a darn good chance at passing CCW laws now. So keep that in mind!

It was done by the lame duck legislature on it’s last day. (They knew it was dead in the new slightly more GOP legislature). Once again lame duck rats screw us. Maine’s new legislature took office a month ago, I see no reason why all new elected officials shouldn’t take office in December. Scumsuckers who were voted out in November have no business reaching into people’s wallets (or letting gays be “here and queer” in the military) in December let alone on January 11th.

I could tell you what I REALLY think of Quinn the thief, Speaker-for-Life Madigan, that odious old crone Barbara Flynn Currie (House Maj Leader) and every sniveling little twerp State Legislator that moaned how “necessary” this was or whined about how “reluctant” they were to steal $1000+ more a year from the average family. I could tell you but this site has rules about profanity.

Somehow this state managed to get along without any income tax for the first 150 or so years of it’s existence. Imagine that!

BTW I just found out the Governor of Illinois is styled “His Excellency” and referred to as such in official state legislative documents. How charming.

I don’t understand why Illinois has a budget shortfall, everybody in the state comes up to Minnesota for their welfare checks and free healthcare.

I read that State Sen. Matt Murphy will propose a bill to repeal the income tax rate increase. I think it might pass, since the new legislature will have more Republicans, in the senate and house.

Keep in mind that we didn't *need* that IL income tax until LBJ and his congressional Rat Pack passed all that Great Society 'carp' at the Fed Level. LBJ's de facto reparations laws passed in 1965 (& '66 iirc), then wham - in 1968(?) IL 'needed' an Income Tax to survive. I'm suuuuure that was just a coincidence.

Granted Gov Oglivie was no 'fiscal' conservative, he also increased State 'social spending' (Mo' FREE MONEY fo' da' po'). But it was that Income Tax which killed his political career.

*** I don’t understand why Illinois has a budget shortfall ***

Simple. Visit the official State of IL Website and dig through the maze of Agencies and Programs. I'd bet that each one's services are duplicated by some other State agency or even two and three other Agencies. It's so FUBAR that if one actually NEEDED State help, you can't find the correct place as it's so friken confusing(1).

(1) Its kind of like a Treasure Map, going from Clue to Clue. But if you don't have 'the Key' to the map you'll never find it. Naturally, the generational gubmint teat suckers know 'the Key' and keep it amongst themselves and which they pass down to each new generation. They use it like a private piggy bank.

I was in Chicago last week and loved paying $6 in tolls for the privilege to drive on federal interstate highways that my tax dollars paid for.

*** I was in Chicago last week and loved paying $6 in tolls for the privilege to drive on federal interstate highways that my tax dollars paid for. ***

That's thanks to ex-Gov and convicted Felon, Blago.

He doubled all tolls for those paying cash. Which was nothing but a blatant ploy for all regular tollway users to get that %$&#ing electronic I-Pass Gizmo and 'give' the state extra money to play with.

You have to start with $40 in your account and when it gets down to $10.00 they take another $40 from your bank. We haven't used ours in quite some time and have about $30.00 just sitting there. And you can't withdraw it. It's 'theirs'.
