Congresswoman still sedated after gunman's attack

TUCSON, Ariz. — Rep. Gabrielle Giffords remained heavily sedated and in critical condition Sunday as investigators sought to understand what motivated a gunman to carry out an assassination attempt on the Democratic lawmaker in a rampage that killed six people.

The assassination attempt left Americans questioning whether divisive politics had pushed the suspect over the edge.

A shaken President Barack Obama called the attack "a tragedy for our entire country."

Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement Sunday that FBI Director Robert Mueller was traveling to Arizona to help coordinate the investigation.

In a brief statement Sunday morning, House Speaker John Boehner said flags on the House side of the Capitol in Washington will be flown at half staff to honor Giffords' slain aide, Gabe Zimmerman. Boehner says normal House business this week is postponed to focus on any necessary actions in the shooting aftermath.

Strong reaction came from overseas, as well.

British Prime Minister David Cameron expressed shock at the shooting, and added that he shared President Barack Obama's belief that "we must never allow violence and hate to extinguish the open political discourse which is our surest protection."

Fidel Castro also denounced the attack as atrocious. "Even those of us who don't share at all the politics and philosophies (of the Obama administration) sincerely desire that no children, judges, legislators or citizens of the United States die in such an absurd and unjustifiable way," Castro said in an opinion piece titled "An Atrocious Act," published in Cuban state-controlled media.

The sheriff blamed the vitriolic political rhetoric that has consumed the country, much of it occurring in Arizona.

Fidel Castro condemns attack on US congresswoman as 'atrocious' [excerpt] "Even those of us who don't share at all the politics and philosophies (of the Obama administration) sincerely desire that no children, judges, legislators or citizens of the United States die in such an absurd and unjustifiable way," Castro said in an opinion piece titled "An Atrocious Act," published in Cuban state-controlled media.

The bloodshed has led many to question the vitriolic rhetoric that has become an ever-increasing part of American politics.

Castro referenced a website maintained by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in which she used the image of a gun's crosshairs to show that she was hoping to target Giffords' district and others politically. The page has since been removed.

In his essay, Castro also mentioned some of the things he disagrees with about the United States, including the fact he believes Arizona rightfully should belong to Mexico, as well as the state's controversial immigration law.

Cuban lawmakers last year passed a resolution denouncing Arizona's immigration law as "racist and xenophobic," and argued the United States' purchase of Arizona from Mexico in the 19th century was tantamount to theft.[end excerpt]

It could be that Sheriff Dupnik is trying to turn away scrutiny about the abysmal lack of concern about this gunman. And just what was the offense they will not name?

Dupnik said the suspected shooter has made death threats before and been contacted by law-enforcement officers. The threats weren't against Giffords, Dupnik said. Suspect in rampage called 'very disturbed' (has made death threats before)

I don’t know why we are even giving the left’s behavior any respect here. They are attacking and accusing people of murders within hours of an attack by a psychotic, with no investigation and no evidence to support it.

If someone identified you as causing these killings, how safe would you feel in your home right now? When the targets are a news channel, politicians and commentators, how safe is our free speech?

FBI Director Robert Mueller was traveling to Arizona to help coordinate the investigation.

Sheriff Dupnik should be fired and a real American put in his place....Robert Mueller is just another government lackey who will help confuse the issue....could Judge Roll have been the target? The truth from this tragedy, will be further muddled by government interference...Arizona is being made a political scape goat for the Progressive party, i.e., democrats.

They certainly are piling on Arizona, Sarah Palin and talk radio.

In essence the Left has targeted Arizona, Sarah Palin and talk radio.

It would appear that the Obama election campaign has swung into high gear.

If we gave Arizona to Mexico we would have to build a fence on the California,Utah,Nevada,Colorado, and New Mexico borders to keep the illegal aliens out of the US.

That’s a lot of extra fence.

Democrats/Progressives use whatever death or crime happens to their advantage....this is a win-win situation for them because of Arizona's stand for liberty in the face of the Socialist Obama administration....perhaps Judge Roll was the target, the others were just in the way.

Pray for Ms. Giffords speedy recovery!

Typical Dem / Loser tactic of getting the first word in, and blaming others to throw people off track of their own incompetent, duplicit actions. This Sheriff has something to hide, the only question is whether there is an honest Reporter out there to dig it up. I suspect his Dept. to some degree looked the other way with this kid as a favor to the Mom.

It won't stop with Arizona.

Clarence Dupnik, the sheriff of Pima County, Ariz., said he would not enforce Arizona's new immigration law, calling it "racist" and "disgusting."

A shaken President Barack Obama called the attack "a tragedy for our entire country."

A tragedy that he can take some blame for based on these quotes from The One himself;

“They Bring a Knife…We Bring a Gun”

“Get in Their Faces!”

“Hit Back Twice As Hard”

"Republican victory would mean 'hand to hand combat'.

I wonder if Rep. Giffords has now been purposefully put into an induced coma to allow brain swelling (which could kill her) to abate. This is frequently done.

Can anyone imagine a bullet going in one side from close range, then through the brain and out the other side as claimed?

And then right after she was shot she miraculously was following testing commands while the paramedics and doctors were attending her.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow....and pray hard for the lady that she has the fullest recovery possible.

This, coming from the man that tried to launch missles at the U.S. in 1962 before being stopped by a Russian general.

Sheriff Dupnik should be removed from office immediately as he did not pursue with charges of “Conspiracy to commit murder” when death threats were made.
As a result of his negligence/incompetency people have died. That is malfeasance.
Another point would be his failure to enforce a state( immigration ) law of Arizona.

So now it’s clear this guy’s a leftist, they want to talk generics like “vitriolic political discourse”, as their specifics don’t hold water.

But still most readers will make the associations they are meant to.

Damn the manipulative media.

‘very disturbed’

yep. That’s the usual angle they take when it’s a leftist or muslim.
