The man arrested for opening fire at a community meeting held by U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Saturday -- killing six people and injuring 13 others -- disrupted classes at Pima Community College, tried to manipulate his dreams and posted rambling messages on the Internet.
The suspected shooter is Jared Lee Loughner, a 22-year-old who lives on the northwest side. He is mentally unstable and may have had an accomplice, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said Saturday evening.
A former classmate of Loughner at Pima, from which he was suspended Sept. 29 for code-of-conduct violations, said he was "obviously very disturbed."
"He disrupted class frequently with nonsensical outbursts," said Lynda Sorenson, who took a math class with Loughner last summer at Pima Community College's Northwest campus.
Dupnik said the suspected shooter has made death threats before and been contacted by law-enforcement officers. The threats weren't against Giffords, Dupnik said.

As a middle school student, Loughner was "kind of an outcast," said Shannin Macey, who said via e-mail she attended Tortolita and Mountain View with him. In high school, Loughner was in jazz band and played the saxophone, but he dropped out in junior year, said Tommy Marriotti, who was a high-school friend of Loughner.
At the time he dropped out, Loughner was having drug problems, Marriotti said, but he seemed to do well once he started taking classes at Pima.
Loughner attended Pima courses from summer 2005 until he withdrew in October after his suspension, the college said.
He tried to enlist in the Army in 2008 but was rejected, said First Sgt. Brian Homme, who oversees Army recruiting in Tucson. Loughner was sent to Phoenix to take a test and physical, but "he was found to be unqualified," Homme said.

Sorenson, Loughner's classmate at Pima, said he was asked to leave the pre-algebra class several times and eventually was barred from class.
Pima officials said in a news release that from February to September 2010, Loughner had five contacts with PCC police for classroom and library disruptions at Northwest and West campuses.
Another Pima classmate, Lydian Ali, said Loughner would frequently laugh aloud to himself during the advanced-poetry class they attended. Only about 16 people were in the class, so Loughner's behavior stood out, Ali said.
"It almost seemed like he was on his own planet, because his comments would have nothing to do with what we were talking about," Ali said.
Loughner's online accounts contain some political comments but are dominated by bizarre discussions of his desire to establish a new currency and his disdain for what he considered the public's low literacy rates. He also wrote threatening and despairing messages.
That does sound quite a bit like schizophrenia. Compare him to the Unabomber, whose writings were perfectly lucid, to-the-point, and completely non-rambling, despite the formula the lamebrain media is always spouting.
Exactly.
Huh?
It could be that Sheriff Dupnik is trying to turn away scrutiny about the abysmal lack of concern about this gunman. And just what was the offense they will not name?
So the Sheriff -- who is blaming talk radio -- was aware that Loughner was a potentially homicidal maniac? Prior to the shooting?
You’re spamming the site with that post.

I want to know if those persons (possibly DailyKos people), that made false and misleading facebook - myspace pages yesterday claiming to be Loughner will be investigated and possibly criminally charged for interfering with and or obstruction of a federal investigation of this crime?
“Alleged Tucson Shooter’s Insane MySpace and YouTube Videos: ‘Goodbye Friends’
Fox News reported this morning that the shooter’s mother was/is a member of the Pima County Board of Supervisors. That her son had been brought up on charges earlier, and the charges had been reduced (I think to a misdemeanor, but I’m not sure...).
If so, what role did sheriff Dupnik play in that arrangement?
It would be interesting to learn the motive for his attempt to join the US Military. Perhaps a ‘Fort Hood Wannabee’?
Then this: “He tried to enlist in the Army in 2008 but was rejected, said First Sgt. Brian Homme, who oversees Army recruiting in Tucson. Loughner was sent to Phoenix to take a test and physical, but “he was found to be unqualified,” Homme said.”
We can only imagine how this rejection played on his narcissistic mind - being so intellectually superior to all the lesser mortals in the Military.
Add the irony that the Congresswoman’s husband is serving in Afghanistan.
NY Times
WASHINGTON His MySpace page included a photograph of a United States history textbook, on top of which he had placed a handgun. He prepared a series of Internet videos in which he posted odd statements about the gold standard, the community college he attended and SWAT teams.
Jared Lee Loughner, in these few public hints, offered a sense of his alienation from society, confusion, anger as well as foreboding that his life could soon come to an end. Friends talked of how he had become reclusive in recent years, and his public postings raised questions, in retrospect at least, about his mental state.
There was evidence of recent trouble, though. Mr. Loughner, 22, was suspended in late September from Pima Community College, where he had been attending classes, because the school became aware of a disturbing YouTube video. Mr. Loughner voluntarily withdrew from the College on Oct. 4.
Another former high school classmate said that Mr. Loughners politics were left of center, and that he may have met Representative Giffords, who was shot in the head outside the Safeway supermarket, sometime before the attack.
As I knew him he was left wing, quite liberal. & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy, the former classmate, Caitie Parker, wrote in a series of Twitter feeds Saturday. I havent seen him since 07 though. He became very reclusive.

Are you sure of this?
“”Add the irony that the Congresswomans husband is serving in Afghanistan.””
HUH?
Nothing about his family, mother specifically. Could she be a Democrat party operative they’re trying to protect?
Good point;)
The same Sheriff who is attempting to include a second suspect!!!!!
Perhaps an older, more influential ‘master-mind’ even!!!
It is my understanding that the mental health laws have been modified such that it is the “RIGHT” of the mentally ill to do something like this. Only then can we absolutely classify that they are likely to cause harm to society.
With privacy laws such as they are any practitioner of care could not tell anyone about the guy else they face loss of job if not lawsuits.
Rather than focus on the gun, or Sarah Palin perhaps its time that the country focus on protection from nut jobs like this. He was obviously contacted by law enforcement more than once - and walked. He obviously has parents who may or may not have tried best they could - but their hands are tied as to how far they can go.
And the question remains how did this guy get the gun? Did he buy it? It’s perfectly logical that he could have bought it - nobody reported his delusional behavior - perhaps out of fear of “offending” his sensibilities.
Ultimately the blame for the tragedy lies on the perpetrator - but our mental health and legal professions have ensured that people like this can walk among us. Maybe it’s time to change THOSE laws.
