It is my understanding that the mental health laws have been modified such that it is the “RIGHT” of the mentally ill to do something like this. Only then can we absolutely classify that they are likely to cause harm to society.
With privacy laws such as they are any practitioner of care could not tell anyone about the guy else they face loss of job if not lawsuits.
Rather than focus on the gun, or Sarah Palin perhaps its time that the country focus on protection from nut jobs like this. He was obviously contacted by law enforcement more than once - and walked. He obviously has parents who may or may not have tried best they could - but their hands are tied as to how far they can go.
And the question remains how did this guy get the gun? Did he buy it? It’s perfectly logical that he could have bought it - nobody reported his delusional behavior - perhaps out of fear of “offending” his sensibilities.
Ultimately the blame for the tragedy lies on the perpetrator - but our mental health and legal professions have ensured that people like this can walk among us. Maybe it’s time to change THOSE laws.
And the "crimes against humanity" which Hitler and Stalin committed were not motivated by anything Evil--just their own lack of "self esteem" developed during childhoods in "villages" that failed to care for them properly. And--of course--much too easy access to guns!
Really really bad--and big--guns!!!
I agree. It can be very difficult to protect mentally ill adults from themselves and to protect others from their actions.
