Police believe that the gunman who shot a US congresswoman in an attack which left six dead and wounded 12 in the Arizona city of Tucson, did not act alone, the local sheriff said. ...believe Ms Giffords, who is out of surgery, was specifically targeted and say a suspicious package has since been found at her office.
Clarence Dupnik, sheriff of Pima County who is in charge of the probe into the attack, told a news conference authorities are seeking a second male in connection with the shooting.
"There's some reason to believe that he came to this location with another individual," he said.
Mr Dupnik said the gunman, who was arrested at the scene, "has kind of a troubled past, and we're not convinced that he acted alone".
He said the gunman had a criminal past and was unstable but not insane, adding that the man was not talking to police officers in custody.

It has been revealed that Ms Giffords, who had previously been the target of threats and vandalism over her positions on healthcare and immigration, had been worried about a map on Sarah Palin's website.
Ms Giffords is one of 20 Democrats whose districts were lit up with gun sight icons on Ms Palin's campaign website last year because they had voted for US president Barack Obama's landmark health care bill.
The congresswoman worried at the time that the imagery might incite violence.
"The way that she (Palin) had it depicted has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district," Ms Giffords said.

I have to wonder if the “50-year-old white man” is a figment of Sheriff Dupnik’s imagination. He doesn’t seem a whole lot more mentally stable than Jared Loughner.

I am so proud that my mom named me Jared. In the Greek language, Jared means “a rose.” I have been blessed with a name that always reminds me of how much my mother loves me.
Do not make Jared a name that means in English “the nutcase.” Jared is so much more beautiful than Adolf. Nobody cares that Adolf is a dead name. Adolf is ugly. Jared is awesome.

My great grandmother’s name was Roxanne, as well as a late aunt and a cousin. There’s another beautiful name spoiled by modern negativity. At least the “Roxanne” of popular musical notoriety didn’t kill anybody. She was just a prostitute.

You are right. Though Republicans are repugnant to using any grief and crisis for political gain they have to realize that the nasty “liberals” will run as fast as they can with it. Republicans cannot afford to merely melt into the background. For things like this they need a strategy, a decent strategy, but non the less a strategy or they stand to become manure for the left.

He showed up early, was asking when Giffords was going to arrive, got in line to greet/speak to her and shot her first at pointblank range, he was then shot at by someone in the crowd and returned fire into the crowd then her staff as they tried to subdue him.
I think Giffords vote for Boehner for Speaker(a given) on January 5th set him off, she also voted for Lewis over Pelosi for minority leader back in December.
It wouldn’t surprise me if he is somehow related to her(Pelosi)
That Sheriff should have stopped talking after about 10 minutes ... the more he rambled the more “speculation” he caused. Some people really “turn on” when the lights come up ... and you need a “hook” to get them off the stage. I think that’s the case here.
One of the guys who pinned the maniac down was a former ER doctor, and he said an elderly gentleman had tackled the 22-yr-old before he piled on...
