John Lindsay might have been the worst mayor in NYC history. Epitome of the limousine liberal, Lindsay nearly bankrupted the Big Apple. But that hasn't stopped Jon Meacham from lauding Lindsay as "one of the greatest mayors in New York history." The former Newsweek editor bestowed the title on Lindsay on Morning Joe today.
Meacham's comment came in the context of grouping Lindsay with Mike Bloomberg as another NYC mayor who didn't deal well with a big snowstorm. But after noting that lapse, Meacham made amends with his GMINYH moniker.
After the jump, view the video and a description of Lindsay's absolutely disastrous record.

New York ping
John Lindsay brought welfare to N.Y.C. on a large scale. This clown was the seed that brought about the liberal revolution on the upper West side and East Village.
Quick Robin! Get Alfred to contact Gotham City Mayor Linseed now!
Linseed Lindsay was Bloomingidiotberg before Bloomingidiotberg...
Lindsay was a good mayor, like FDR was a good President and Edward R. Murrow was a good journolist.
New Yorkers seem to labor under the delusion that the rest of the country gives a hairy rat’s patoot about their city and whichever gang of crooks is running it.
Meacham = Lunatic.
Dad was NYPD...he made his salary from NYC...and back in the 70’s all he did was complain that Lindsay GAVE the CITY AWAY!!!his administration sent millions of middle class families out of the city and into the burbs...
we had Dhimmicrats like Robert Wagner who did not give the city away...it took a POS Rino(later a POS Dhimmicrat) from the silk stocking district to give the whole friggin thing away and put NY into the poorhouse...this remained the same until Koch then Giulliani were able to bring the city back into solvency...(Beam and David (the Dink)Dinkins was just as bad as Lindsay...)
the ones who cared, LEFT a long time ago...
“John Lindsay might have been the worst mayor in NYC history”
I thought that honor when to Dinkins.
Good point. Dinkins disastrous tenure is fresher in the memory, but in terms of doing outrageous union deals that left the city permanently in hock, instituting the city income tax, and running up multi-billion deficits back in the 60s when a billion was real money, I’d say Lindsay takes the booby prize.
Where does this guy Meacham live?
Did he forget that crippling transit strike that brought the city to its knees? The strike was brought on by Lindsay’s fiscal mismanagement of the city prior to the event that had all city workers looking for their “piece of the pie”.
And, it was the great Mike Quill, the head of the TWU (Transport Worker’s Union), that made a fool out of Lindsay by repeatedly calling him Mr. Lindsley.
Meacham is simply another libturd that suffers from recto-cranial inversion.
This man is psychotic. More people fled NYC (almost 1 million) under Lindsay than any other municipal political leader in the U.S.
Meacham admits to man-crush on NYC’s ‘handsomest mayor’.
I’m hesitant to list John Lindsay as the worst (I’d argue that Bloomberg and especially de Blasio were many levels worse (the latter being an open Marxist, which makes him worse by default especially when Marxist’s endgame is a gorier remake of Robespierre’s Reign of Terror.).). He’s certainly one of NYC’s worst mayors, though, and one who shouldn’t really be remembered as a great mayor at all, what with the exodus of over a million New Yorkers from the city, or the huge welfare programs, or the fact that he basically destroyed law and order in NYC, among other things.
And quite frankly, it’s not just Meacham who’s giving undue praise to him either. Jeffrey Katzenberg (yes, the same Jeffrey Katzenberg who ran DreamWorks, acted as a big donor for Democrat candidates, and nearly ran Disney to the ground even with the Renaissance in the 1990s before being fired by Eisner) worked as part of his campaign staff twice, first during the 1965 mayoral election back when he was 14, and second during the 1972 presidential campaign where he backed Lindsay for a failed Democrat nomination, even dropping out of NYU to back his campaign. Now, bear in mind that at that time, NYC was in deep trouble thanks largely to Lindsay’s actions as mayor, which had been listed in various other comments, so for Jeffrey Katzenberg to think what he did to NYC was good enough that he attempted to get John Lindsay to be the Democrat nominee challenger to Nixon, basically spread the sorry state NYC was in across the nation... it... it just horrifies me, chills me to the bone. Oh, and apparently, he specifically backed Obama far beyond just backing the democrat because Obama’s Hope and Change rhetoric reminded him of the Lindsay years.
Thanks for the ping. I lived in NYC during Lindsay’s time as mayor. Not only the ultimate limo lib, but he entered into ruinous contracts with various civil service unions that came close to destroying the city, and ultimately led to it being put in a form of receivership. Total disaster of a mayor!
