Navida Joy knows she needs to liberate herself from the District's dole for good. The divorced mother of three has been receiving city welfare checks on and off for six of the past 10 years.
But Joy, who gets about $430 a month in welfare checks and $440 in monthly food stamps, supports a controversial plan by the D.C. Council that would slash her benefits and those of other long-term welfare recipients.
"The council's move is the right idea, but there are a lot of people out there who depend on it and need welfare," said Joy, 28, who lost her bartending job at T.G.I. Friday's in August and takes medical coding classes at a local trade college to find work. "Right now, I am facing eviction because I can't pay my rent. I'm not as motivated as I should be. I've been dealing with a divorced family. But I am trying. I plan on getting off welfare and not begging for money."

A prayer for her.
As I would an alcoholic, I support her in her “sobriety”.
God speed, Diane.
I agree, but, I have to give this woman credit, sounds like she’s at least trying. She’s probably overwhelmed and yes yes it looks like she brought it on herself. But, like I said, at least she seems to get it.
The plague of Socialism.
Diane - until you can support them, please stop having children.
Amen to that one.
looks like she is certainly getting enough to eat
Rebuild the poor houses.
Is it not wrong to make it easy and comfortable for people to remain poor?
Being poor is supposed to be hard and unpleasant!
Merry Christmas!
"Are they going to guarantee me a job to raise my kids?" asked Greenfield, who lives in an apartment in Southeast Washington operated by the nonprofit Community of Hope for those who have struggled with drug addiction. "If they don't, then it's going to be, 'Are they going to take away my kids?' It's scary. If they cut me off, how am I supposed to get Pampers, shoes and socks for my babies?"
These lazy-ass parasites make me want to puke my f****** guts out! Scum of the earth!!!
HOW
MANY
FATHERS?
The plague of Socialism.Yup.
Sigh.
Well, I’ve never worked much
In fact, I’ve been poor all my life
I guess I really own is
Ten kids and a wife
This house is a lived in mine
But it’s really a shack
But I always managed somehow
To drive me a brand new Cadillac
Backdoor steps
They done fell plum down
Front screen door’s off and laying
Somewhere out there on the ground
Wind just now whupped another piece
Of that old tar roofing off the back
Sure hope it don’t skin up that new Cadillac
Front porch ?, they’re loose at the bottom
It don’t make no sense to fix them
Cause that floor just too darn rotten
Wintertime, we sometimes have some snow
That blows in through the cracks
It gets too bad, we just all pile up
Sleep out there in that new Cadillac
I know the place ain’t much but
I sure don’t pay no rent
I get the check the first of every month
From this here federal government
Every Wednesday, I get commodities
Sometimes, four or five sacks
Pick em up down at the welfare office
Driving that new Cadillac
Some folks say I’m crazy
And I’d even been called a fool
But my kids get free books and
All them there free lunches at school
We get peanut butter and cheese
And, man, they give us flour by the sack
Course, them welfare checks
They make the payments on this new Cadillac
The way that I see it
These other folks are the fools
They’re working and paying taxes
Just to send my youngins through school
Salvation Army cuts our hair and
Gives us the clothes we wear on our back
So we can dress up and ride around
And show off this new Cadillac
Thank you for using Top40db.com.
But things still gonna get better yet
At least that’s what I understand
They tell me this new President
Put in a whole new poverty plan
Why, he gonna send us poor folks money
They say we gonna get it out here in stacks
In fact, my wife’s already shopping around
For her new Cadillac
I think the poor woman is probably trying to improve and she must have had the lights flicker on. But where’s Daddy? These children are all very young and very close together, so she must be still be able to remember his name. Of course, he’s probably forgotten hers, but that doesn’t matter.
I knew someone who worked with a program for pregnant highschoolers. It turned out that THREE of them were pregnant by the same guy, who was 12 years older than the oldest of them. One girl went to court to seek child support...and the other 2 threatened to kill her for “turnin’ on a brother.”
Until that culture changes, I’d betcha that all the male children in that photo will be in jail by age 15 and the girls will probably be pregnant or already have kids.
I’m not criticizing this woman, who has enough problems of her own, but the culture that has produced this.
This one is something of a prude...
...the three fathers of her four children...
The lady in the story not only gets her welfare, food stamps and now unemployment for another 3 years- much more than low income employees.
What was not mentioned is that she also gets free medical, etc. for her children and most likely for herself as well.
>>Diane Greenfield, who has five children between the ages of three months and six years old, has been receiving welfare payments on and off for seven years.<<
Someone should have mentioned to her they know what causes pregnancy now and even how to avoid it.
There is also this thing called “marriage” that establishes a stable household and usually staves off poverty.
I hope she means it. Yes it will be a hard road but she chose that road. There is No excuse for 5 children under 6. NONE
They forgot to mention in addition to foodstamps and welfare seh receives WIC for herself and 4 children. The 6 y o wouldn’t get WIC any longer but he would get free breakfast lunch and after school snacks.
Yes free medical care and almost free housing as her section 8 housing costs would be based on her welfare check.
She is just one of millions across the nation
“Until that culture changes...”
That is root of the problems in the inner city — the culture.
