Curious....during drafts, were gays excluded if it was obvious or they admitted to being gay?

Yes. If someone was a known homosexual he would not be drafted. He would have been rejected by his draft board. There were people who pretended to be gay to avoid the draft. If you were already in the military, and were discovered to be a homosexual, you were thrown out of the military (no matter how good your record was otherwise).

If you’ve ever watched M.A.S.H., the character Klingle uses his dressing up as a woman to try to get himself out of the Army. That series was pre-DADT, supposedly set during the conflict in Korea, when we had a draft and homosexuality was an instant 4F (reject).
