WASHINGTON -- In a landmark vote, the Senate on Saturday ended the Clinton-era ban on gays serving openly in the military, marking a major triumph for President Obama, liberals and the gay community.

The final vote to end the Pentagon's 1993 "don't ask, don't tell" policy was 65-31, drawing support from eight Republicans.

The bill now goes to the White House for Obama's signature. He is expected to sign the bill into law next week, a senior White House aide told Fox News.

ROLL CALL - H.R.2965 — Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act of 2010

United States Senate - December 18, 2010
Motion agreed to by a vote of 65-31

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=111&session=2&vote=00281

*Note: for the “Measure Title” it says, “A bill to amend the Small Business Act...”. That is because the repeal of DADT was added as an amendment to this bill.

so you have no problem with the homosexual agenda or them openly serving, is that what you really are saying?

Live and let live, get real and wake up. This is about in your face you can nothing and we can kiss, hold hands, dress as women have sex when we want and there is not a damn thing you can do . So when you say live and let live no business what they do , well it’s a crock and sounds more like you advocate the queer agenda.

“We outnumber the blacks by a large majority, and the Hispanics (so far) by a large majority...”

Who is this “We” that you identify as being out numbered by blacks and Hispanics?

As long as they’re on duty they’re governed by regulations on fraternization and inappropriate conduct. That already applies to heterosexuals and it will now apply to gays as well.

That platitude sounds no noble -devoid of reality but noble -a dream for a leftist dreamer devoid of common sense.

What about having to live in close quarters e.g. shower with homosexual sex practitioners? Being forced to live in close quarters with disordered perverts is okay? This mandate is far worse than if the legislators started forcing males and females to do the same...

You are cluelessly lost...

I’m curious about which report you are referring to.

Maybe this will stir up enough conservative outrage that it will be an issue for the GOP pres. canadidate in 2012. Repeal the repeal.

I think anyone who believes that DADT will ever be reinstated, or that homosexuals will ever again be barred from the military is dreaming.

First of all, it's an issue that only exercises right-wing conservatives. The rest of America either doesn't care, or is fine with it.

Secondly, for those voters who are not strongly opposed to gays in the military, a presidential candidate who is activity campaigning to bring back the ban will simply come over as a bigot -- especially once the attack ads begin.

Third, bringing back DADT will not be an option, since there will already be thousands of homosexuals serving openly by then (13,500 have been dismissed under DADT, so the numbers are not small), so the only option would be an outright ban, and that is a far tougher sell since you would faced with the prospect of thousands of troops being expelled at once, and the press would have a field day even at the prospect of such an eventuality.

Finally, if the US policy change follows the same pattern as those in other countries (including the UK, which changed around 10 years ago), then there probably won't be major disruption when the new policy is enacted, and by 2012 it will have ceased to be a issue that can drive people to the polls, especially if the economy is still in the toilet (which will probably limit the number of resignations on principle too).

Add to that the simple fact that getting a supermajority in the Senate in 2012 is highly unlikely, an the Dems are never going to do a deal that includes reinstating the ban.

Thus, in reality, it's going to be 2014 before any chance of new legislation on this issue could be passed into law, and by that time, I strongly suspect that it will no longer be a political issue Republican candidates are willing to go to bat for, even if they were endorsed by the Tea Party.

On issues like this it's far harder to play offense than defense, because your opponent can make you look like an ass for "victimizing" thousands of servicemen and women.

Thus I just don't see any way this change is ever going to be reversed -- not even if Republicans have large majorities in Congress and have the Presidency. For better or for worse, the new policy is here to stay.

Conservatives support a fig leaf rather than principle. That’s how they’ve been losing ground on this issue for the last 15 years. No one wants to admit we need to restore the pre-1993 policy.

As I said, either ban it or move on. You guys are fighting the last war when what we really need is a victory!

Agreed. And to build on what you said, consider this. Obama’s approval numbers seem to hit a new low once or twice a week these days. Last I heard congress’ approval was all of 13 percent. So it’s not like the DoD is quaking in its boots over a massive backlash. The Tea Party is stronger right now than Obama or the Dems. Added to which, if the higher ups destroy the rank and file troops, they lose big time on many levels.

So yes, there are many reasons for the DoD to delay implementation. Let us pray they drag their feet until DeMint & co. figure out how to reverse this abomination and get us back on the right track.

no you have it wrong and you have been listening to the media too much,
I had a survey and it never asked if don’t ask should be repealed nor did most return their surveys due to them not wanting to go on record and be targeted.
Also most of the survey was done by families of soldiers and marines who will not be hurt by this.

Also if a survey was given and it looked to have been answered with middle of the road answer then it was put into a pile of we don’t mind.

The whole survey was skewed and corrupt along with the media who did their report on it BTW not one marine or soldier I know serving wants this repealed.

Yes I did serve and talked to a pal over in Kabul today who said he and others were not going to leave as soon as they can along with my sons who were heading for the Marines who are now not joining.

At this point, I think our gear is the internet, our brains, our voices and our vote.

We have to start thinking outside of the usual box. Which box is that?

The one where:

When we vote Republican, we’re really voting commie (dem) lite.

When we get a tax break passed, it’s temporary, but when the commies get Obamacare or a queer military, it’s permanent.

When we kick the commie as* in an election, we sit back and quit paying attention while our Republican ‘representatives’ join hands with the dims in screwing us.

When sh*t like today happens, we just sit back and cry.

I hate the bastards, but i gotta give lefties credit: despite the fact that they’re outnumbered and most Americans hate what they stand for, the deviants have gotten A LOT of what they want. How? Well, they always have a plan, and they think strategically as well as tactically.

We don’t do that enough. Conservatives are very good at identifying problems, but not very good at coming up with solutions.

And these guys fight dirty. Our side is always trying to be gentlemanly and civil. And that’s why we keep getting the crap kicked out of us.

I can tell that most of the guys around here are rough and ready types. They’ve been in fights. And they know, like I had to learn the hard way, that if you knock a guy you’re fighting down, you keep him down. You don’t let him up. But our side does that all the time. Recent example: the so-called tax compromise.

I’ll stop with this. Right now, I’m working on a secret project that I think can help with this stuff.

Can the new congress offer a new bill to make it illegal to be a homosexual in the military?

Technically, yes. Realistically, no. Anyway, liberal courts would strike the law down as "unconstitutional" after the sodomites get their foot in the door.
