Germany defiant as Europe suffers
The Telegraph ^ | 12/17/2010 | Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

Posted on 12/16/2010 4:56:49 PM PST by bruinbirdman

Germany has refused to give any ground on Europe's rescue machinery despite the escalating political and economic crisis across much of the eurozone periphery, guaranteeing a bitter clash with EU partners at a crucial summit in Brussels on Thursday.

Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged that no euro member would be "left on their own", but dug in her heels against the creation of eurobonds and demands to boost the EU's €440bn (£372bn) bail-out fund. "We must not make the mistake of thinking that collectivising risk is the answer," she told a stormy session of the Bundestag.

The defiant stand came as Moody's issued a downgrade warning on Spain owing to "high refinancing needs in 2011" and the risk of further bank bail-outs. It said central and regional governments must finance €200bn next year. Spanish lenders have to roll over a further €90bn.

"These needs are now rendered more challenging by the fragile confidence of international capital markets. Foreign investors have typically funded around 5pc of Spain's funding requirements. They may be less willing to do so in the immediate future given recent speculation about the treatment of bondholders should Spain be pushed to seek support from the EU/IMF," it said.

Moody's said Spain may need to inject €80bn of fresh capital into the banks under a "stressed scenario". The agency said Madrid seems unable to control the debts of regional juntas. There appear to be “no policy initiatives” to discipline health and education spending.

Merrill Lynch said in its global outlook that Spain’s public debt is “under control” but bank woes could yet entangle the state, forcing Madrid to seek a rescue.

Yields on 10-year Spanish bonds rose briefly to 5.6pc on Wednesday.

Bond traders say the country may have trouble raising funds until it becomes clear

The Germans are getting tired of picking up the check for all the Euro welfare states. The guilt from WW2 is almost extinguished and this generation of Germans and certainly the next aren’t going to be shammed into making more monetary payments. This needs to end and end NOW. No more German money to pay for the people sitting on their behinds in Greece and a few other places.

Since Napoleon, Europe has had to rely on A) The UK to keep the Peace 2) Leech off of Germany's economy because they are too lazy to manufacture there own Stuff and 3) when the first 2 aren't available rely on America for both! Have the US keep the peace and leech off Americas economy!

They wonder why the Germans feel used and abused by the other nations, The rest of the EU Is like that Aunt and/or Uncle that could never find their own wallet when the Tab comes around!

Since Mom is British, Dad is German, and I am an American Guess I got the Euro-Trash Royal Flush!

Lemme figure this out...

The former East German, Osti, politican...is telling a statist Globalist body like the EU to go “stick it”

Meanwhile, Free Trade Communists and Open Borders NutJobs are still trying to push the North American Union, and claim “NAFTA is a success”.

Oh, and the East German lady is running a country that actually has a rebounding economy...while the Free Trade Communists in this country continue to pursue failure.

Germany may clean all our clocks, before the Communist Chinese do

I have a friend who lives in Denmark. He brags about how Denmark provides all social service from cradle to grave - medical, education, food, housing...wonder how he feels about subsidizing southern Europe...

ohh yes I have an Idiot cousin that HATED living here in America is an Atheist and had him self sterilized to prevent Global warming from the offspring(shudder), I think he is me from Opposite world because he is my antithesis

Anyways he didn't think that America was a good place to raise children (I would have you reference my previous sentence)so he Moved to Holland and I hear he just LOVES it there, for all the reasons that you described, I guess he wanted to be a 24 year old baby and have the state GIVE him everything.

But hey Denmark makes Lego's and The Dutch have Lots of Pot so I guess they can use THAT to Bail out Greece, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Et al.

I wouldn't TOUCH them at 40% with a 10ft pole.

The EU is Dead. The Euro is Dead.

Inveist in the Duetsch Mark after the fact...maybe the Franc.

It hurts me to say I'm not sure about the Pound Sterling.
