The Obama administration wants to convey how to react to a nuclear attack but is worried about seeming alarmist.
The advice is based on recent scientific analyses showing that a nuclear attack is much more survivable if you immediately shield yourself from the lethal radiation that follows a blast, a simple tactic seen as saving hundreds of thousands of lives. Even staying in a car, the studies show, would reduce casualties by more than 50 percent; hunkering down in a basement would be better by far.
But a problem for the Obama administration is how to spread the word without seeming alarmist about a subject that few politicians care to consider, let alone discuss. So officials are proceeding gingerly in a campaign to educate the public.

All part of the ‘absorption’ strategy eh Barry?
bttt
Civil Defense and a prepared public is a good idea.
nahhh, a better idea is to let Iran continue on , unabated , so all the terrorists can be armed.
That way we can be driven into their barbaric caliphate and have stonings every day of the week.
They know something they are not telling us. Not good.
They are worried about being seen as alarmist? Nearly everthing that has come out from this pos administration has been caricatured a crisis.
Or stand behind a fat Democrat like Debbie Stabenow and let her take the initial flash.
IIRC Three feet of wet dirt stops the initial gamma ray burst and several inches of air or a sheet of paper stop Alpha & Beta radiation.

Filter your air and eat/drink from covered sources and you will survive...
IF the initial blast, flying debris & resultant fires don’t get you. But, that “IF” is the same for conventional bombing & shelling.
Back in the ‘70s there was a USMC instructor at the NBC Warfare (nuclear, biological & chemical) school married to a Japanese lady. She had been a one year old infant in a bomb shelter near Ground Zero at Hiroshima (perhaps Nagasaki) when the bo,b was dropped. She survived and all their children were normal.
“When this man ran for the presidency I said we would probably be hit. Barky just confirmed it.”
Yup. Add this to the latest warning about potential holiday attacks (the story buried under headlines about the Biggest Loser, Dancing with the Stars, etc). I vividly remember the Cuban missile crisis and my dad filling plastic barrels full of water. We were going to head for the crawl space (lived in S. Calif. - no basement).
Mt thoughts exactly, and I suspect zero and company are part of the plot. He “needs” an event like the OKC bombing that saved Bubba’s @$$. The “hit”, if comes will not be on a major coastal city, it will be in the heartland - OKC, KC, St. Louis, etc for maximum impact on public morale....red
Change back to the early 1960s you can believe in!
True, except that the initial pulse of IR and UV (not to mention the neutrons) tends to have done its damage before you have the time to think, "Oooh, I better get behind something!" Kind of like being shot with a rifle: the hit comes first, THEN the sound.
And while you're slowly coming to realize that you've just been fried in your tracks, then comes the blast wave, and whatever you were just hiding behind falls in your lap.
Missing in the article is the necessity of having a reserve supply of food at hand, perhaps two month’s worth (a year would be better, of course).
That’s one message the government could get out without alarming anybody.
Rodger Lodger: I was never an optimist for the human race -- although I admire it greatly and am rather fond of it -- but the banality of again worrying about atomic war offends my sense of grandeur.
barbaranyc: Oh, good more fear. I guess that will take our minds off the extension of tax cuts for the rich.
The weak are easy prey. And Obama projects weakness on a grand scale.
Let’s hope that those who may want to attack us first carefully consider this quote from Japanese admiral Yamamoto, right after Pearl Harbor:” I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.”
Obama is no FDR resolve-wise, but the average American is still plenty tough.
Recalling some old info. There are three types of radiation alpha, beta, and gamma. Gamma radiation is very short electromagnetic radiation which penetrates materials. So take cover in basements, subways, any substantial structures if you are close to the detonation. Alpha and beta radiation are short range. If caught outside, breath thru a filter of some type, shower and change clothes as soon as possible. Beta radiation is worse if you breath it.
if possible, before the flash (never look at a flash, never look in that direction until the shock wave passes) cover exposed skin to prevent burns. Roll down your sleeves, turn up your collars, etc. As I recall, the intestines are particularly sensitive to radiation damag, so have materials on hand to replace the bacteria in the your gut and for diarreah.
Pray to God that it never happens, but prepare for the worst.
