Huckabee Building Mansion In Florida
TPM ^ | 12/9/10 | Eric Kleefeld

Former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR), a 2008 presidential candidate and possible candidate again for 2012, is currently having a multi-million dollars mansion built in his new primary residence state of Florida:

The Arkansas Times reports:

Former Gov. Mike Huckabee is building a $3 million house on Blue Mountain Beach just east of Destin, Fla. He bought the lot on the famous sugar sand beach last year for $800,000 and this year took out a building permit for a house expected to cost $2.2 million. The three-story house will have 8,224 square feet of living space and 2,969 square feet of decks and porch. A pool or spa is also in the works.

Walton County tax records show Huckabee has a $2.8 [million] mortgage with Centennial Bank after paying off $250,000 of the land purchase. This is in addition to a $375,000 mortgage outstanding on his vacation home in North Little Rock's Shady Valley.

Unfortunately there is a lot of class envy here on FR.

If Palm Beach Gardens is bothering you, there’s always Belle Glade or Pahokee.

(ducking)

Some of it is class envy, others are pointing out the abject vanity of a man unwilling to buy an existing estate that at the peak was worth $13M+ that could now be bought for the same price as his new estate will cost.

Or he could have bought a home worth $8M+ at the peak and saved several million dollars...

In the end he is suffering from the same vanity of every man who buys a home above his payscale... once Huck gets canned on Fox his future earning potential is not going to support a mansion that must be costing him more than 10% of his GROSS worth.

Or to put it another way... the rule of thumb for the high net worth clients is do not spend more than 7% of net on housing.... For Huckabee to be spending in excess of 8.5M for housing would show he has a net worth of over 60M...

It’s possible, but highly unlikely if he isn’t into some shady dealings.

On top of that, unless his children are making huge incomes themselves year after year after year, the family will lose the house probably upon the death of the surviving spouse due to estate taxes...

Very questionable financial planning for a man using a FoxNews gig as his primary income.

PB Gardens is nice; I spent a number of winters working in Naples, before i became the “theme park” it is now, when normal people lived there.
It was great.

Huck is a better snake oil salesman because he can get his people to send him money like Jimmy Swaggart did. Mitt has to spend his own money.

Well if Palin wins this thing, I’d certainly applaud that choice of VP.

Ya gotta admit Pissant, that would be one unbeatable combination.

It would setup a conservative Presidency for the next 16 years.

Knowing Sarah's take-no-prisoners approach and her refusal to be the normal GOP compromiser, my blood pressure would certaintly be much lower for that time-span.

As you can easily tell, I’m not pulling for the top of the ticket. I’d prefer it the other way around. That said, Palin is not so noxious to me that I wouldn’t vote for her; unlike a McCain or Mitt. Palin is still in the learning phase of conservatism and would do well to have a cheney-esque VP. I think DeMint fits that bill nicely. Of course, I reserve the right to change my mind if a Petraeus or Odierno becomes available.

Some people are so class envious here that they seem to know everything about Huck's business, his assets, his income, his debts, his mortgage arrangements his donations, his hopes and dreams....and his final will and testament. And they know he's making a big mistake in everything he's doing....and somehow the place is being built with, shhhh....ill-gotten gains?

Conservatism at its finest on this thread.

I don't see a McMansion on that beach. I see a man who chose of his own free will where he wanted to build, what he wanted it to look like and what he wanted to pay for it.

I see him entering into contracts with all kinds of Florida tradesmen, craftsmen, construction folks and purveyors of furniture, appliances and decorations.

Florida is non-union and work is now totally hard to find for the good workers and merchants in this area of industrious, modest-income folks. Florida is one of the top four states in almost non-existent real estate and construction activity and it has been for over a year.

Let's celebrate the fact that Huck, whether he is your friend or foe, is metaphorically providing more jobs on one sandy lot in the Sunshine State than the big-talker Obama has personally created in the whole universe.

Has anyone here ever been hired for a good-paying construction job by a poor person living under a viaduct?

Let the man spend every damn dime he owns for that home. It's a GOOD thing, no skin off OUR backs.....and none of our business, to boot.

Leni

I agree, and yet it always surprises me somehow. Other than that, to paraphrase Barbara Bush, Chuckles seems to really like Florida. I hope he stays there.

I as a taxpayer, am subsidizing mortgage insurance for beachfront property, and I resent that. Nothing personal agaist Huck, though......l

Mitt has to spend his own money.

Mitt raised a lot more money from donors.
