Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has a bold goal for the next decade: Overhaul the country's immigration system so that every worker in the United States is legal.
"We are not going to deport 11 million people," Gingrich said Thursday as he kicked off his first forum on Latino issues. "There has to be some zone between deportation and amnesty."
A possible presidential candidate, Gingrich stressed that his target of establishing an entirely legal work force is "not a call for amnesty." Rather, he said, it's about applying common sense to the immigration debacle.
"Dos y dos son cuatro" (two plus two equals four), he said to chuckles. . .

Newt’s correct, of course.
.
Can we just export Nootie Grinchrich?
.
I believe President Bush had a pretty good plan....the so called “path”...
‘There has to be some zone between deportation and amnesty.”
NO THERE DOESN’T!
We deported huge numbers during the depression and in the late 50’s.
11 million criminals deported would be a good start. Lets deport the soon to be convicted traitor democrat politicians too!!!
Oh for the love of Pete.
Do what they do with drug dealers and their ill gotten gains. Seize everything they have if they are caught in the country illegally. If they leave they can take their ill gotten gains with them.
There are a lot of FReepers whose ideas run precisely along those lines. The practicality of rounding up illegals, and the political and legal realities of dealing with the people so-collected, are lost on the border-bots.
You are quite correct that the problem originates among those who are paying illegals to come here. I would extend the blame to various state, local, and federal entities that provide long-term welfare benefits to those folks.
That means the world coming from you my man!
LLS
Viva McCain! Viva Newt!
They can run on the amnesty ticket in 2012.
We don’t HAVE to deport them. Don’t give them jobs, free housing, college, food, medical care, allow their kids to be instant citizens, etc., etc. and they’ll deport themselves.
Why not? Eisenhower took care of the illegals for a time by using the Army. Fear of being rounded up eventually took over and the Army's job became much easier. Of course, no president we've had in the past 20 years has had the intestinal fortitude to do it, certainly not the usurper we have now.
Your own word 'border-bots' portray your 'open society' kinship... we are not talking about half loaves we are talking about bread crumbs dribbled out to us from and by the elitist that use these people as cheap labor, might call it the secret slave trade behind country club estates, and the destroyers of America.
“.Newt is right and so is everyone else...it’s impossible to deport 11 million people....many of whom have been living here for years...and working....and paying taxes”
How do you know they are paying taxes??? Many of these construction types get paid cash. If you think they are
paying taxes from that, you are crazy.
Even if they are paying taxes, the amount that goes in from their low-wage jobs will NEVER exceed what they take out in
services.
It’s a net loss.
Translation:
“zone between deportation and amnesty” = amnesty
“common sense” = amnesty
“an entirely legal work force” = amnesty
Bush, Rove, and Specter thought they could take the so-called “border bots” (remember that term from a few years ago?) for granted back in 2006 and 2008. That’s what Juan McCain thought when we ran for president as a supporter of “comprehensive immigration reform.”
Those people will vote for us anyway. They have nowhere else to go. Well, November 4th, 2008, Juan McCain found out they could just as well sit out the election and enjoy watching his ass go down in flames.
Obama outperformed Kerry in almost every state in the Union. I think Louisiana was one of the few exceptions. Even in the Red States which McCain carried, the race was closer than it should have been because millions of conservatives stayed home.
Wasn’t it about 11 million as far back as 2000 ? The numbers are always either 11 or 12 million and I never see gov provide higher numbers, they seem stuck on 11 or 12 million, by now we should be up towards 20-30 million or more.
“Make it impossible for shady employers to hire illegals, get rid of birthright citizenship for the children of illegals, and deny them benefits.”
Isn’t that what he said?
Gingrich floated the idea Thursday that credit card companies could be tasked with creating ID cards that track workers’ legal status.
“Let’s find someone who actually knows what they’re doing,” he said. “It should be possible for any employer, anyone in the United States, as fast as you swipe your ATM card to get cash, to swipe a card to know whether or not they’re able to hire you.”
After much pondering, I'm now betting that none of my grandparents ever became citizens.
