The U.S. Air Force is ready to respond immediately if hostilities between the two Koreas escalate, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz said Wednesday. Schwarz told reporters after North Korea's attack on Yeonpyeong Island, "The bottom line is that U.S. Forces Korea cetainly is monitoring the situation carefully."
He mentioned Osan and Gunsan in South Korea, Kaneda in Okinawa, Japan, and other U.S. Air Force bases in the Pacific to emphasize that the U.S. has plenty of firepower in the region. Schwarz added USFK Commander Gen. Walter Sharp "has operational control of Air Force assets that reside on the peninsula and can be augmented if required."

LeMay would have already done IT. He wouldn’t have waited more then 20 minutes. President be damned.
Strike? Against which side? Pakistan?
i thought barry would “convince” the world to be peace loving and sing kumbyyaaa together
Kaboom!!
The General is truly a “bottom line” kind of guy. He also said:
“On the issue of a possible return of tactical nuclear weapons to South Korea, Schwartz said the issue has not been discussed by the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, but added he would advise Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen to the best of his ability. “The bottom line is, we have substantial capability on the peninsula and in the immediate environments to sustain a very credible deterrent posture,” he said.”
The first quote is a little out of context since it was in response to the question of forces in the area and the interpretation in the opening line is a little misleading.
However, all that said... let the frickin’ UN handle it and let U.S. get out of the way. Seriously, why is it that the world hates us until they are in trouble? This much of being a Libertarian I am in favor of.
NORK are being provocative to orchestrate extortion and to assert the new Imawackjob successor to Imawackjob I. It is a foolish game but not too foolish because the CHICOMS are backing them.
If we have a true interest in the area we should kick the livin’ crap out of them. Only Regan would do that... nothing and forget it or definitive action. He also refused to pay anyone extortion.
He'd do what the Commander-in-chief directed him to do, and then, if it wasn't his idea too, would complain about it being the wrong policy.
I’ll await forming a decision on what to do with NK until Jimmy Carter weighs in. He, of course, will first have to consult with his daughter, Amy. /s
worried about korea, the middle east, or any other hot spot in the world....do not worry, just do some research....see carter, jimmy for further clarification
Yes.
So Korea is not gonna do jack s**t until we do something. This is ALL BS by China to tie us up and make us look bad.
China and SK do a huge amount of trade together. This is such NONSENSE! SK is selling tons of Hyundais in America. Use some of that money to build up their defenses more.
Hey SK - Japan is not your enemy. Stop buy weapons to fight a war with Japan.
If after 60 years SK cannot protect themselves from NK then WTF is their deal?
Nonsense, noise, meaningless BS by China.
Spent a year uphill from Kadena on top of Futemna, great party town for a young guy or gal.. well... it used to be.. Some of those old rock clubs must be internet cafes about now.
God Bless our fine young men and women ready to do battle for our way of life.
Obammy and Nappy would think that racist. Giving NK more “aid” would be better./s
Bammy won’t do anything until NK joins the Tea Party....
At least you got the time span right in this rant.
” let the frickin UN handle it and let U.S. get out of the way. “
If I understand the historical background correctly, the U.S. *is* “the frickin’ UN” in this situation, since our Status of Forces in South Korea was established by a UN mandate which predates SEATO or any bi-lateral defense treaties which may be in effect....
He'd light that big cigar and commence to kick A$$!
There are thousands of North Korean Artillery pieces trained on Seoul, the political and economic capital of South Korea. The Republic of Korea probably could defeat the north, but tens of thousands of their civilians will die.
Just send in the B2’s.They’ll never see it coming.
In the end, US and SK would prevail, but the slaughter would be WWII-like.
Only nukes can neutralize the NORKS...a sudden strike in the Capital, all major bases and every 2-3 miles along the DMZ with "small, tactical" nukes.
There are AT LEAST 10,000 MRLS tubes pointed at Seoul with another 5,000 Howitzers...all within range. The damage would be nuke-equivalent...and they could shoot the whole wad in less than an hour and without any tactical or strategic movement of forces.
That said, PERHAPS a non-nuke EMP attack would take out the MRLS systems and most/all their CCC capability along the DMZ. We probably also know where the bulk of their nuke weapons are...assuming they actually have any that won't "fizzle".
Ultimately, this question has to be answered:
Does the "civilized world" have the will to kill 10-20million people to prevent a similar toll of their own?
Really? Where did I go wrong? SK has their own military. This is BS noise. SK capital Seoul is right on the border with NK.
NK’s artillery can take out much of Seoul in a day. If you think China is going to allow that then keep dreaming. The Chinese are about $$$ and power. Business between SK and China is too good to screw things up. Chin and SK are getting rich - they “ain’t” gonna let NK screw that up. NK wants a few billion under the table from SK. Just another shake down.
This is China flexing it’s muscles to make us look bad. Not much we will be able to do until 2012. Having a usurper muslim in the white hut is all about getting opur troops killed and humiliated. People in 2008 cast this die. We have plenty of idiot anti-birthers/semi DUm dummies on FR who say - “oh leave it alone.”
