A hit piece by a liberal blogger about a slip of the tongue by Sarah Palin regarding the crisis on the Korean peninsula has become an international news story that is being spun to impugn Palin's credibility as a potential presidential candidate.
Palin has been dishonestly quoted out of context in dozens of articles and broadcast reports as saying on the Glenn Beck radio show on Wednesday, "We gotta stand with our North Korean allies."
Here, in context, is what Palin actually said (transcription by Kristinn):
Glen Beck: "Sarah you said, you said in the last few days that you are considering a run for president. And uh, polls show that you would probably win the Republican nomination. How would you handle a situation like just developed in, in North Korea?"
Palin: "Well, North Korea, this is stemming from I think a greater problem when we're all sittin' around asking, "Oh no, what are we gonna do?" and we're not having a lot of faith that the White House is gonna come out with a strong enough policy to, um, sanction what it is that North Korea is gonna do. So this speaks to a bigger picture here that certainly scares me in terms our national security policies. But obviously, gotta stand with our North Korean allies. We're bound to by, by treaty."
Beck: "South Korea."
Palin: "We're also bound by, yeah, we're also bound by prudence to stand with our, our South Korean allies. Yes. And, uh, you know to remind North Korea, well, we're not gonna reward bad behavior and we're not gonna walk away. And we do need to press China to do more to increase the pressure on North Korea."
The smear started with liberal blogger Oliver Willis who posted an entry with the title, AUDIO: Sarah Palin: "We Gotta Stand With Our North Korean Allies. The blog post did not transcribe Palin's interview with Beck, it just had a snarky comment, "Genius. Absolute genius. When Glenn Beck is correcting you on foreign policy, well genius."
Willis included the audio clip in his post which this transcription is based on. As can be seen, it was a simple slip of the tongue. But, because of how Willis disingenuously framed it, the slip has become "truth" to once again be used to smear Palin as ignorant of foreign affairs.
The hit piece was picked up by Mediaite, a site founded by former MSNBCer Dan Abrams, which titled their hit piece, Sarah Palin - North Korean Allies.
Mediaite also posted the audio clip. But even with the evidence that the comment was clearly a slip of the tongue, Mediaite smeared Palin as ignorant by quoting her out of context rather than publishing the entire exchange with Beck.
For good measure, Mediaite brought back a previous smear of Palin that claimed in 2008 when she was selected to be John McCain's running mate she did not know Korea was divided between North and South.
The Weekly Standard came to Palin's defense last night with a piece that chided her critics for the smear.
That did not stop the smear from going global, however. A Google News search shows nearly one hundred articles accusing Palin of not knowing that South Korea is our ally.
Wire services, broadcast networks and newspapers across America and the globe have gleefully picked up the smear.
The BBC piled on today with an article that said, "Her slip of the tongue over North Korea will provide more ammunition for critics who say she doesn't have sufficient knowledge or experience for high office."
The Times of India headlined their article, Sarah Palin's Latest Verbal Gaffe - North Korea an Ally.
It is a testament to Palin's global reach and influence that such a simple slip would garner worldwide headlines and be used by her enemies here and abroad to smear her.
However, the truth must be told and the media once more shamed for their duplicitious reporting.
Bruce: ‘Are you interested in building unity and momentum for Gov. Palin with those who would vote for her?’
Presently: “I’m not interested in your kind of building...”
Bruce: Clearly. The question is, why not?
++++++++++++++++++
Presently: “I don’t trash a true conservative”
Bruce: Please explain how in the world I’ve done that. Are you kidding?
++++++++++++++++++
Presently: “You, Scott and the rest of the ‘she needs...’ have fun while you can - there are enough who want to bring this nation down ‘in their own way’.”
Bruce: Presently, you’re being absurd to accuse me of being in the same camp as those that want to bring the nation down; in the same camp as those in the socialist media (your earlier accusation which you never, ever supported in any way shape of form.) Your accusations are completely unsupported, nor do you even try. It’s quite amazing to me - and to think we’re really not that far off in our viewpoint of Gov. Palin. Whatever is your point in all this with me?
No to mention Bidens nasty, brainless temper. Utter scumbag and totally incompetent Obammy suck-up.
ScottinVA is more than able to defend his positions. He's already told you that he is a supporter of Sarah's, and has outlined how and why. As I've said Presently, just because people don't do things your way, doesn't make them wrong or a Sarah trasher. Again, this is just in the realm of absurdity - can't you see that?
“I'll defend SARAH because she is worthy of defending”
As will I. So guess what? You have no corner on that market. You'd better be glad about that. We'll get nothing done if we don't unify against the enemy.
“I'll defend SARAH because she is worthy of defending - she is a PATRIOT from the get go, she is a much needed conservative voice and ‘one of us, we the people’.”
Completely agree.
“Anyone that is against her, is against every PATRIOT, against every God-fearing American.”
There seems to be a huge disconnect with you between someone that is not in agreement with you on all points, approach and strategy re: Sarah, and someone that is against Sarah Palin. If you can't see the difference Presently, I can't help you there.
“Of course, they say they aren't against her - but their ‘concern’ posts prove otherwise.”
Aha. So it's not allowed (by you) to talk of any areas of growth with Sarah Palin? Wow, really? If we post as many ‘concern’ or critique posts for Jim DeMint or Marco Rubio when headlines come up about them, will you then believe that we support Gov. Palin, or is it more than that with you? In any case, re: this whole slip of the tongue I defended Sarah. I did talk with her detractors about how I agreed she could follow in Reagan's footsteps (traveling overseas and such.) Apparently such an approach, such comments are deserving of derision in your sacrosanct Sarah world. I don't live in such a world. I live in a world where Sarah can make mistakes and grow - and that's OK and that's good. As can Jim DeMint (and I've mentioned specifics) and Marco Rubio, et al.
“Deception is always wrapped in some truth.”
You're fond of making these high minded accusations. You've yet to show me how I'm in ‘the same camp’ as the enemedia or those ‘who take the country down in their own way.’ My goodness Presently, do you know what you're accusing your FRiends of, and can you back it up, or just wave your arms about these things? Specifically, why are you accusing fellow Christians of deception (or of being deceived) while not looking at yourself? Is it possible you too are capable of being deceived by shades of truth, and even by your own self righteousness? I know that's possible for me!
“The liberals, commies and rino’s want their pound of flesh from her however they can get it - and I want no part of their demonic tactics. I would never align my self with it, much less turn from it but fight it, as SARAH has done so successfully for many years. If you have a problem with that, stand in line - for you won't be the first or last because evil knows no bounds.”
Look, I have no trouble with you spiritualizing this battle. We're both Christians, right? As in all things in life, there is a spiritual aspect. I'm not convinced however that President Palin is God's only course for carrying out His will for the USA. As I've said, I will support Gov. Palin should she become the nominee - but currently would like to see what Jim DeMint, Marco Rubio, Sarah Palin, Paul Ryan and Michele Bachmann all bring to the table.
If that makes me a Sarah basher, then wow, I guess that's what I am in your alternate world...;)
Wow, Pres... my position is, in your opinion, "trashing of Sarah." So, anything short of kool-aid - induced genuflection is now "trashing." Got it.
If Sarah is the strongest conservative in the GOP primary field in 2012, she gets my vote for the nomination. If Jim DeMint, Mike Pence or Michele Bachmann jump in, she won't.
Of course he does, he has only won a single election in his 18 years of running, he failed in that office and left with 34% approval, and he is famous for his appearing desperate and ambitious, and for having no other reason for his drive to win the presidency than to fulfill bitter, family, ambition.
