Sarah Palin's Mike Huckabee problem
WaPo ^ | 6:00 AM ET, 11/23/2010 | By Aaron Blake and Felicia Sonmez

1. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Monday that Sarah Palin might well "run away" with the Republican nomination for president.

It's funny Huckabee should say such a thing, because he's got a lot of say over whether she does just that. And it has to do with whether he even runs in the first place.

As potential 2012 candidates weigh their prospects and determine their plans for the next presidential race, one thing is clear: that Huckabee and Palin inhabit largely the same space -- i.e. they each would perform well without the other, but they might undercut each other if they are in the same race.

There is currently a four-candidate top-tier consisting of Palin, Huckabee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. And indeed, a new Quinnipiac University poll on Monday showed the four of them all huddled between 15 and 19 percent of the vote.

But while Huckabee and Gingrich have pretty broad support, the base of support for Huckabee and Palin is readily apparent, and for both of them, it starts with born-again evangelicals. The two of them combine for 46 percent of that vote, compared to just 26 percent for Gingrich and Romney. Palin and Huckabee are also the top two vote-getters among women and people without college degrees.

So why is that important? Because if any of the four frontrunners seems least likely to run for president, it would be Huckabee. And, if he doesn't take the plunge, where is his 26 percent share of evangelicals going to go? Where is his 18 percent share of women going? Who gets his 17 percent share of those without college degrees?

The obvious answer to all three of those questions is Palin.

That’s the truth, tndarlin. Those two couldn’t beat McCain, but they both think they’re ‘the one’ this next time around. The lust for power... makes me sick. Both are non-starters.

Right, Huckabee is delighted to play along. He’s smitten, in fact. All the attention and flattering words have gone to his head. This morning on Fox ‘n Friends, he was sickening to watch.

You peaked my interest in Iowa elections on the evangelical Christians and are spot on:

From a USA Today 2008 article:

Long-shot Republican candidate Mike Huckabee declared “a new day in American politics” Thursday after riding strong support from evangelical Christians into a decisive victory in the Iowa caucuses.

Huckabee, an ordained Baptist minister and, like Bill Clinton, a native of Hope, Ark., managed to win despite trailing badly in national polls for most of the year. He out-hustled runner-up Mitt Romney and better-known candidates John McCain, Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani with a coalition of pastors, home schooling adherents, gun rights advocates and supporters of a new national tax system...

Susan Geddes, a former Huckabee volunteer who became coordinator for a 14-county area, cited turnout from “social conservatives” who also liked his positions on protecting the border and keeping taxes low. “He’s been consistent for all the years he’s been a public servant,” added Geddes, a home-school teacher who caucused at a church in Martensdale...

Thank you! Just frustrated that the media keeps pushing RINO’s. Really I am just sick of the whole mess. After the election, I thought something would change...all it really did was show the true colors of the elites in DC.

If those are the only four choices, I choose Sarah. Hopefully there will be a few more choices out there.

I think Sarah would have to choose someone more (Romney) to her left in order to moderate the ticket or someone viewed by the party (higher ups) as more of a serious (Demint) intellect.

Yep. Last time we had nothing but moderates to pick from. This time they want to load up with moderates whom they’ll all say are arch-conservatives, so as to try to split the Palin vote. Mitt or Mitch will stand alone as the moderate ‘adult’ positioned between Obama and the far-right fire eaters.

“Are there political platforms that Huckabee holds that need to be shot down? Has Huckabee done something morally repugnant that he should be rejected for?”

Yes, and Yes!

Huckabee hold that it is “Un-Christian” to deny benefits to illegal aliens. He is a big government social conservative, not a small government conservative.

As far as moral repugnance, he swept under the rug by ‘killing the messenger’ the torture murder of a dog by his son. He also has the “O Brother Where Art Thou?” approach to clemency for convicted murderers, and was basically giving away “Get out of Jail Free” cards to anybody he thought sufficiently remorseful to the Lord.

As a candidate it would be harder to think of a more flawed, vapid, and damaging candidate.

I would not only not vote for Huckabee, I wouldn't vote for a ticket with Huckabee on it even in the VP slot.

That answer your questions?

Seems like Huck is soliciting big backers to make his muddying up Iowa and SC, at least, worth his while. Someone might offer him the #2 in return, but Huck wants the best deal he can get. They are practically negotiating in public right now.

Huckabee is the new mccain.

Huckabee is a scam artist politician who is trying to parlay his NYC media show into connections cozy with the MSM.

Huckster should go home and stay home.

Yep. Mitt’s got NH sewn up, so if he wins Iowa it could all be over very quickly. It is worth a great amount to the Roves of the world to have Huck in Iowa.

Huckster trying to cover up what his son did says a lot.

Correct. Iowa is tailor-made for Huck: social conservatives who are addicted to government pork like ethanol. New Hampshire is tailor-made for Mitt: economic conservatives who just want us all to get along on divisive social issues like abortion, gay marriage and such.

Sarah might win in Iowa but she would be wise to skip NH.

The importance of both states is greatly overhyped.

*******************

It is a classic indicator of sociopath tendencies. It is an earmark of most serial and signature murderers, although an incident does not necessarily mean the individual is locked on this path. Disturbing though.

Until primaries are closed to only registered Republicans there is little point in comparing candidates because the democrats will be choosing the one they want just like they gave us Juan Insane so their Barry the Bastard boy would have weak opposition. Palin was a surprise they didn;t anticipate from Juan, but they’ve managed—with the eager assistance of their propaganda scum in media—to neutralize her to this point among conservatives and moderates.
