N. Korea fires artillery towards S. Korean island, official says
SEOUL, Nov. 23 (Yonhap) -- North Korea on Tuesday fired several rounds of artillery towards South Korean waters and an island near the tense west sea border, the South's military said.
The North's artillery shells fell at 2:34 p.m. in the South's waters off the island of Yeonpyeong, some of them landing directly on the island, said Col. Lee Bung-woo, spokesman at the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff. The South's military responded with its artillery firing.

Interesting threat and negotiating starting point.
No Can Do!!
My wife thinks this is a response to the news about the tactical nukes yesterday.
Any online source yet to their new demands?
The real possibility of stiff reprisal may make them blink, offering token apology and declaring it as their victory. That has happened before.
Otherwise, this cycle of provocation would continue. NK would see no risk in another provocation. Moral hazards in military terms.
Russia says N.Korean attack is 'unacceptable'
Nov 23 (Reuters) - A senior Russian Foreign Ministry official said on Tuesday that North Korea's artillery attack on a South Korean island was unacceptable and called on both sides to show restraint to prevent a wider conflict.
"We think the use of force on the Korean peninsula, and in international relations in general, is a path that is absolutely unacceptable," the official told reporters on condition his name was not published.
Parting gift for daddy?
Next level in NLL area provocation is the sustained attack on one of these islands, and attempt to occupy it. It will be a mini-war. That is in the pipeline, too. It could happen down the road, if situation develops in their favor.
Why not take out some Nork subs? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_active_North_Korean_ships
The junior trying to make his dad proud while impressing aging military brass.
The date on the photo is 2008?
The ROKs know it is not over. The next provocation will be worse [although i cannot think of anything worse for a Nation than sinking one of their warships]. They just do not know wht it will be, where it will be, nor, when it will happen.
What will the ROKs do? The same thing we are doing over here as obama tightens his strangle hold on us. Bend over, take it and gripe and complain.
The Colonists fought King George for inflicting far less indignities and humiliations on them than obama has inflicted on us.
No one has ever read about a Colonists saying after a Red Coat withdrew his finger his butt, “It makes me feel secure.”
Your assuming junior has control of the military. I’m not so sure thats a done deal. He needs to spread some wealth around to them.
Probably a full frontal assualt is next of Baekryongdo Island, first, considering, a) it is isolated...this is how the DPRK gang up and “jump” the enemy, like M-13 gangs, when he is isloated and with little nearby support, b)could take taken after intensive bombardment, and then stormed by special North Korean landing troops. I think South Korea should stay on FULL ALERT and raise security level to the highest possible. I also believe US should consider evacking civilians from Seoul.
Decimating NK naval base in the area is one of the plan, I heard. As far as I know, the whole place has been thoroughly mapped, including underground caves to house submarines and shore artillery bunkers.
thanks for the ping
If a naval base is destroyed it is visible for the journalists, it is perhaps better to take out submerged subs first. Then no one knows if a Nork vessel is missing or not. But it sends a strong message to them when the subs get silent.
Agreed.
What kind of timeframe would you expect to see a ROK reprisal, if indeed one is forthcoming? Within 12-48 hours?
