Mitt Romney eyes smaller footprint, later start for 2012

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is letting donors know it’ll be a while before he looks to 2012 — and that any presidential campaign he builds will have a much smaller staff than in 2008.

“People are exhausted from the 2010 election, and they’re not anxious to begin right away with the next campaign,” Romney told 245 of his top financial supporters on a conference call Thursday, a Romney aide told POLITICO. His team organized the call to connect with top supporters following a busy 2010 season and discuss Romney’s political future.

Romney also told supporters that his organization will be “smaller in scale than our last effort.”

The rationale, as Romney explained it: In 2008, he was a little-known figure who had to spend millions on a large organization if he was to compete against Arizona Sen. John McCain for the Republican nomination. In that cycle, he announced an exploratory committee in January 2007 and officially announced a bid in February.

This time, January and February will come and go without an announcement, he told his supporters — and he can plan a leaner staff because he’s now a leading national Republican figure and needs a team that can hang on through a prolonged primary campaign amid a crowded GOP field.

Joining him on the call were top staffers certain to be part of any operation, however small, including Beth Myers, his 2008 campaign manager; Spencer Zwick, who was his finance director; Matt Rhoades, who runs his Free and Strong America PAC; and Eric Fehrnstrom, his longtime spokesman.

He’s free to travel. Those digital answering machines will hold up to twenty minutes worth of calls. ;^)

I actually fear the Rinos and non-elected Republican elites more than the Rats concerning Sarah. They will play along for a while and try to appear conservative. When the situation gets critical, that’s when they stab you in the back, examples: Joe Miller and Christine O’Donnell.

ROMNEY MUST LEARN SOMETHING FROM PALIN. EYE FOR BIGGER COJONES ... AND LEARN TO FIGHT LIKE A MAN!

It's a little late in the game for that. The race has already begun, and Romney has done NOTHING over the last two years to over-write his abysmal RINO record.

He's been an invisible ghost to the public, and now suddenly thinks that he can jump in and win a presidential race on name recognition alone?

Ridiculous.

If Romney didn't learn how to be a man from his own father, then there's nothing that Sarah can help him with. She's shown him how it's done, but it's too late for him to grow a spine.

“The other two you mentioned were both milquetoast, Beltway legislators. No real leadership creds between them.”

There are milquetoast Beltway legislators but there are also milquetoast executives such as Huck and Romney. That’s the real problem. We need someone who can forcefully articulate conservative principles with a record to match.

But Romney probably can win NH next time since it is close to MA.

Are you dumb or do you just play dumb?

MA was next to NH in '08 too.

Romney now resides in La Jolla, CA, not MA.

Twas a joke on McCain’s inability to take his position as the MSM’s favorite anti-republican maverick beyond the stain of actually becoming the republican nominee.

Aw man, you're too deep for me tonight .. LOL

You're right, though. McCain only thought he wanted to be president. When the prospect of it actually coming to pass was in reach, he bugged out and threw the fight.

Trolls are easy to spot. And yes I also will not share my secret of how to see them.

Well, sure they're easy to spot, once you've got your official FR decoder ring, silly! Even trolls must know that!

(oops. Did I just give away our secret?)

The voters still remember him. He is so close to being another McCain that they’ll probably give it to him.

I’ve read every post on this thread...loving every word taking down Romney! It’s been a toss up bewteen Romney and McCain who I detest worse....but McCain wins the contest as he handed Obama to us....but had Romney won he would have lined up policies to advance his religions agenda and more babies would be murdered..., which would have been equally as bad for our country! So they both run neck in neck for being the worst of the worst.

Thanks for taking this creep down...I just can never find the words to describe the guy...these posts did it just fine! :)

Keep working at it, friend. You're getting close to that big epiphany. Just a little further...

I heard you guys were getting free Pizza Uno, then it was Pizza Hut, then Ci-Ci’s, and finally no pizza at all. Where’d all that Soros money go?
